MG MGA - Broken spokes

I have a broken spoke on one wire wheel. I can only trace one wire wheel specialist who is in the north of England. Moss says why not buy a new wheel as having the old one refurbished is as expensive as buying new? This seems a bit much for one spoke. Does anyone know where I can go in S. England.

If its only one spoke and the rest seem tight and make the right 'ping' when tapped why not replace the spoke yourself?

I had two spokes broken on one of the rear wheels. I bought two new ones from Brown & Gammons in UK and replaced both. I just tightened them up until when running a pencil over them they pinged. Do not overtighten them. You will have to remove the tyre of course before you can put them in place. Make sure that you buy the right size spokes as there are two different sizes on the wheel. I did not experience any problems since.

Hi
Poor guy
you have ONE broken spoke :o)))
I had 18 broken spokes on ONE front wheel :o(((
As I had another wheel with broken spokes I canibalized one to fit the other
It is not difficult to do
The only thing : I have now a wheel without spokes :o)) and I am searching for replacement spokes at a decent price because if I have to buy all spokes it is cheaper to buy a new wheel

PS I am not a driving brute but chromed spokes are sh*t. next time I will buy stainless spoke wheels

As a matter of interest, who is the wire wheel specialist in the North of England as, of hand, I can't think of one.

Mr.Windenberger
I have a large quantity of MGA spokes. If you could supply the number needed and the sizing I will check and see if I can help you.

I bought 10 short unpainted steel spokes from MWS International in the UK a couple of years ago. Ten is their minimum qty, and they came with new nipples. They were a good company to deal with. They need to know if you have 48 or 60 spoke wheels, and whether you want long or short spokes.
Prior to these, I bought a few painted spokes from a local MOSS supplier, but these may have been from another source. They were painted over chrome!
I have fitted replacement spokes without removing the tire. Just let the air out. Then you can rotate the nipple to unscrew and screw in the spokes, after applying copious lubricant. Sometimes manipulating the new spoke into the inside of the rim can be challenging!
Had fun when I went into a local shop and asked the girl on the customer desk whether they had a "nipple wrench". She could hardly contain herself, and had to call for a supervisor - another lady. They were almost falling about with laughter. (A 1/4" spanner will do the job.)
