MG MGA - Bumper Removal - Moss Apron 455-112

I liked the look of the MGA featured on the cover of the Jan/Feb NAMGAR magazine. I am considering doing this along with the removal of the rear bumper. Does any one having any experience with the Moss Apron wish to comment on the fitment, difficulty or anything else regarding my idea?

Remember that you will have to cut the two bolts that hold the front bumper onto the front extension to use a flush apron. Can’t say that you couldn’t weld ‘m back at a later date, but it may be hard to get them straight. Here is a shot of the back of my car—TR-3 bumperettes with a long Euro-backing plate.

Thanks David,

I thought the front Extensions simply bolted to the frame. I guess you decided to remove the rear bumper only looks good.

David,

I thought I could unbolt the bracket which is attached to the extension?

This has been covered before, but the two studs for the front bumper are welded to the frame extension. Not adviseable to remove the frame extension as it is the front body mounting point. The studs aren't too hard to remove. You have to cut through a couple welds on each one. I did this for a friend when he put on one of those Moss valances. Depending on your car, you have to play with it to get it to fit. The studs can be welded back on. Carl Heideman used to sell new replacement ones.

David,
How is the licnce plate and lamp mounted on the rear? Did you use the bumper mounting studs, or did you make some other bracket? Maybe another photo directly showing the back of the car would assist us.
When I fitted the front valence to my 58 coupe, I removed the outer bumper mountings - they just bolt on, and left the inner ones. I then mounted two driving lights to the bumper studs. (I'll try to post a photo of the front of my car) The valance was a standard one from Jorge, and the body shop blended it into the body. We also extended the front wings so that the are removable but line up with the valence.

I love the 'sebring' look. The PO put on this Moss front valance, and said that it took a lot of fit-up to make it look like it belonged. This one is fiberglass.

...and in the back, I removed the rear bumper brackets (simple unbolt from frame) and used snap-in plugs purchased at local hardware store to trim out the holes.

Note: may not be completely street legal in all states, but no one has bothered me on this where I live.

Will try to explain what I have done to the rear of my MGA. The TR-3 bumperettes are attached to the rear bumper brackets that bolt onto the frame. Extra flat washers were used to get them good and tight. The license plate holder was built-up: 1) Two holes were drilled thought the rear panel at the level of the bumper to match-up with the two holes in the Euro-long style backing plate. 2) Lamp bracket was bolted onto OEW (?) U.S. style license plate holder. 3) The assembly was then bolted onto the rear panel using rubber grommets to protect the body panel.

The front extension studs are nothing special - just a suitable bolt with the head cut off and welded in place to the chassis extension. One of mine was missing when I restored the car, and that's how we fixed it, looks just like it was originally made.

I have begun fitting the Moss valance to my car. It does take a lot of work. It looks like I may end up cutting it into several pieces and glassing it back together to match the curve of the fender.
