MG MGA - Car scrappage scheme UK

I see that you can now get GBP2000 for your MG, courtesy of the UK Government! Hope to hell that there aren't too many desparate MG people out there!

It will be interesting to see how the system progresses. Early media speculation suggested that people with these old cars (cars must be over 10 years old) could not afford a new car, or would be unwilling to commit in these hard times, even with the £2000 allowance. You also must have owned the old car for a minimum of one year. That all said, a similar scheme is apparently doing ok in Germany.

All cars traded in on this scheme have to be scrapped (crushed), so not sure about taking spares off them.

Lots of mfrs/dealers are already offering £1000-2000 'cashback', and this is subtracted if the scrappage scheme is taken up. So if your old car is worth a few hundred, scrappage isn't worth it anyway.

Bet the paperwork will be horrendous.

Probably with hidden costs.

Wot's the value of "scrappage " in Germany?

The government are on to a good thing here. They only give £1000 of the money - apparently the manufacturer contributes the other £1000. The government then get the tax on the car sale - which is more than they put in. (or so a recent TV programme stated)
If you were to buy a £135000 Ford Focus then you could probably get that for £10k with no trade in and a bit of haggling. So the £2000 scrappage allowance would cost you more!!

Gentlemen,
For the benefit of us Colonials..what is GBP2000?

Gerald I think you will find GBP is Great British Pounds as USD is United States Dollars. Most scrap MGAs are worth far more than 2 gran anyway so no fear there. This deal unfortunately is only for a limited period anyway so it will not be around long. Hopefully it will encourage consumers to buy a new car but I am not sure the kind of person in the UK who buys a new car is also the type who has a 10 year old car to trade in. I think it is fair to say that most new car buyers are either fleet operators or people with a car they have owned for 2/3 years from new.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

It's on main stream news as I type. The big up take is on micro cars. Nissan says interest in sales is up 400%. Ford says very poor response and is suspending it's interest in the system. There are also arguments about Value Added Tax (VAT - a 15% levy) on the trade-in deal.

As Bob says, the Government wins on this deal.

The whole scheme is badly thought out. when it ends, car sales will slump so no overall gain in production. If it is a good idea, why not a) perpetual, b) apply it to every kind of manufactured item? I'm afraid this kind of thinking is bad for old car enthusiasts and government meddlers.

Hi Cam
don't think they will sell many of these ford focus cars at that price?
"If you were to buy a £135000 Ford Focus then you could probably get that for £10k"
but £10k sounds a bargain!

Oops - well spotted Ross - one too many noughts on the Focus price - if they were that price then Ford would be trying to focus!!
