MG MGA - Carb heat shield

The asbestos is gone on my heat shield. What is the best substitute?
Art Pearse

Art, I don't think many places supply the 'asbestos' cloth pads. I got mine a few years ago from Anglo Parts and they look ok - perhaps a bit thinner than original - they have the look of asbestos but won't be of course. Before I found AP I was contemplating using an 'asbestos' like board that is found over here in builders yards. It is about 1/4" thick and rigid but can be sawn and drilled. It is used for roofing work for soffits and the like - very cheap and heat resistant. mike

If you're not worried about originality, what about some of the modern heat-resisting materials that seem to be so readily available now, for instance: http://www.rallyusedparts.co.uk/shopping/rupshop/heatshield.cfm Regards, Lindsay.

I don't know what it's made of, but Home Depot (possibly Lowe's) sells a fire-proof blanket used to protect wood when soldering water pipes. As near as I can recall, it was a sheet of an asbestos-like material about 8" by 12".

Might be worth a try.

What about a double skin of metal, spaced about 1/4" behind the shield, where the asbestos used to be?
Art Pearse

Did the old asbestos cover the lower edge of the shield or just the sides? There are mounting hole only at the sides.
Art Pearse

Mine has "asbestos" just at the sides.
Lindsay Sampford

Thanks. I'm going to go with an extra layer of tin.
Art Pearse

Art, make sure you have the cool air duct from the grille to just forward of the carbs; quite important.
Lindsay Sampford

OK Lindsay, will do. Second question - the upper part of the shield, between the carbs - is it supposed to be flat with the rest of the upper part? Mine is bent backwards so it is almost touching the intake manifold equalizing tube. It does not look very professional.
