MG MGA - carb to carb hose
I feel a little stupid asking this question, but its been a long time since I did any work on the carb to carb hose, and I didn't find my answer on Barney's site. Is the brass fitting at the end of the hose that attaches to the front carb part of the hose? I can't remove the hose from that bit, the hose end just rotates. Thanks, George |

What hose? |

I assume that it is the fuel supply hose. Is that correct? Mick |

The fitting has a hose barb. The hose is secured with a crimp ferrel. If the hose is bad cut the crimp fitting to remove the hose, ans you can re-use the end fittings. |

George, The nut on the end of the hose will rotate freely of course but the pipe into the hose should be fixed or else it may leak petrol. I bought two new hoses during my restoration but they were both incorrect. The diameter of the carb-carb hose was too big and the pipe-carb hose was too long. Over the years I've seen many pictures where the pipe-carb hose looped up excessively because they were too long. So I decided to make my own and bought a metre length of steel braided nitrile hose with 1/2" OD and 1/4" ID. I made the carb-carb hose 15.75" end to end (including fittings) and the pipe-carb hose 11.5" long. Getting hold of brass ferrules was not easy so I made them up from copper end feed reducers 15-10mm. These are easy to get from plumbers shops over here and they are cheap at around 20p each. You have to trim the 10mm end a bit, hammer it flat and then file the correct diameter hole. To do the crimping I modified a copper tube cutter by removing the cutter blade and replacing it with a 1/8" thick disc. I made two crimps on each 'ferrule' - see pic. If you still have the original yellow petro-flex bands on the old hoses you can move these to the new hoses. Using a hair dryer you can soften them to get them off and heat shrink them back on the new hoses. I was surprised they had heat shrinkable plastic back in those days. ..........................Mike ![]() |

Nice job Mike. I cheated and used rubber hose and screw clamps over the old fittings. |
