MG MGA - Chassis to Body Felt

Am about to re-unite my body to the chassis and have been told not to use the felt packing material that you can buy from Moss as the felt retains water.

What does everyone recommend using and what size - was thinking maybe 2-3mm rubber sheet ??

Thanks
A Stojanovic

You can use the stick-on foam sealers for windows and doors, available in all sizes, eg 1/2 x 1/4. Use 1/8 cork on the supports.

For all horizontal mating surfaces (except under the doors), packing should be cork (under bolted parts of the body). For the side joints between body sill plates and top of side frame rails, I like to use 3/8 inch thick close cell foam rubber. For sure, do not forget to seal the fixed parts of the battery cover on top of the fame side rails. See here:

Todd Clarke makes up a body packing kit with all the pieces in cork and closed cell foam.

Yes you can use the modern close cell foams, but I think felt will be fine taking into account how much (or how little) the cars are used these days and how well they are looked after.

I bought a packing kit from Bob West, Pontefract, UK some 10-12 years ago. I guess he still makes them.

Certainly avoid anything that could hold moisture. I seem to remember when I removed the body on my then 18 year old car in 1976 the chassis was perforated with rust holes so originality is not a good idea. I rebuilt with foam which from memory was similar to boot seal rubber, and its been OK for 35 years of summer use since.
