MG MGA - Choice of carbs

Anyone using a version of the HIF SU carb ?
Roger W

I know of at least one MGA and very common on MGBs! Excellent carbs if originality is not an issue.

I suspect there is a next question?
Neil MG

Yes, but a Single HIF6 in conjunction with a Judson.

There is certainly something to be said for the beauty and simplicity of the SU H that came on them as they rolled off the line.......The HIFs on my B work just fine..........

Honestly I prefer the external float bowl. Easier to service on the road if necessary.
Steve Simmons

I used to use the HIF, without any problems. Seem to recall that I used MGB inlet manifold with them but I may be mistaken.

Do many A drivers have HS style carbs on the their cars....what advantages do you see.........Tom

A friend of my has 1.75 HIF SUs on his A. They work fine - I believe it is more what you have access to and price rather than distinct advantages.

The standard HS carbs are much simpler than the HIF, which only has the advantage that the jet is temperature compensated for hot conditions. It has the major disadvantage of having the float chamber under the carb, so it is closer to the manifold and in a standard installation would be more prone to fuel evaporation.

I would think that the pair of 1.75 inch carbs would be over the top for an A, as a supercharged car runs just fine on one. This HIF44(which is the metric version of the HIF6) is the carb used with the Moss SC and Neil and I have used on our Judson modification.

Incidentally if you are needing a HIF, it is cheaper to buy a new one from Burlen (application for a Sherpa van) than buying a used one on ebay. The only differences are in the fuel inlet side, linkages and the needles, and some have shorter dash pots to cope with limited space , but all other parts are interchangeable .

For the Judson mod, the Sherpa HIF also has the fuel inlet on the correct side for the application and needs no modification.

Tom,

The big change from the H type to the HS was the method of fuel feed from the float chamber to the Carb body. The HS does away with those sometimes troublesome rubber washers and is probably less prone to leaks.

There are also a lot more HS around, certainly in the UK, and so they tend to be cheaper.

I saw something I didn't know existed the other day at a show - an updraught SU on a late 1920s car. It was all cast in bronze. I knew about downdraught ones but this was a new one on me.

Neil and Mike - both correct - our H4s are unreliable where our HIF4 (on a B) have operated faultlessly - i have a spare set of HIFs- any views on needles (.09 jet and twins of course) - they have to be sprung ?
