MG MGA - Choke Cable Question/Problem

I've already posted my question and problem with my choke cable on MG Experience so I will just put the link here and ask you to look at it and tell me if my choke cable is fixable. It's the original and I would like to use it but it will not lock. http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?2,3150526

Is is supposed to lock by turning it counterclockwise or clockwise? A John Twist video I watched said CCW.

Thanks

I've got two choke cables (one spare) and they may not be original but they both lock by turning either ACW or CW. There is a groove in the knob shaft in which the steel ball rides and the ball is held in place by a 1/4" wide circumferential spring.

If you can't lock yours and it is the same design then either your steel ball is missing or it is all rusted up and not free to move. If you could open up the spring a touch and slide it off then you may be able to clean up the ball or replace it................Mike

Well, you learn something new each day. I have always pulled and twisted clockwise. Mike's comments got me scurrying out into the garage and sure enough it twists and locks in either direction. Thanks Mike for that snippet.

I slid the spring steel sleeve down and was able to remove the brass key but there wasn't a ball and doesn't look like there ever was one. Here's the text from my last post on MG Exp:
"Well, I think I have it working now. I sanded each side of the brass key and got rid of the burrs inside of the shaft. In order to turn it to the left for locking, I have to pull the choke almost all the way out before it will turn and then push it in. It clicks as it goes past each step on the shaft. If I turn it back to the right, it will go in freely.

Is this how it's supposed to work?"

I checked mine again and it will lock by turning it to the right but you have to turn it more in that direction that turning it to the left. Regardless, I have to pull it almost all the way out before I can turn it.

My MGA choke cable just pulls out and has 3 detents, it will stay by itself. My TD has a cable that is turn to lock.

I know the MGA cable is original. TD is a Moss replacement.

Problem solved by talking to John Twist. See the last post by me at MG Exp http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?2,3150526
