MG MGA - Continuing saga of my $5000 car

Continuing saga of my $5000 car. I pulled both brake drums and found that both sets of brake shoes were crumbling. I ordered shoes and wheel cylinders from Moss. I also had the rear drums turned as there was a ridge on both of them. While removing the left wheel cylinder I broke the fitting on the brake pipe where connected to the wheel cylinder. Upon further inspection the right side looks weak while the main line appears to be fairly new. Qustion is should I replace both lines from Moss or is there a flexible hose(s) that would be better?

David,

It sounds like you are referring to the brake pipe between front wheel cylinders (Moss # 181-140)? If so by all means replace both sides. This brake line is pretty exposed so a $15 replacement part is pretty good insurance.

I have never seen or heard of flexible lines for this particular brake line probably because one end would need to independently rotate for installation. That might be prohibitively expensive to manufacture. In addition there is no mechanical reason for a flex line in this location.

John,
No it's the rear and the part numbers appear to be 181-145 and 181-180. Listed on Ebay is a flexable hose that looks easier to install.

Dave, that is the flex hose that feeds the rear axle via a 3-way connector. The pipes to the wheels are rigid.

Ahh, that makes sense. Removing the old rear flex line can be a bear of a job. If you can get the front pipe and lock nut loose then you can remove the two back pipes and take the three way fitting out of the car. I could not break mine free while it was still attached to the rear break lines with out damaging something.

While you are back there clean off the top of the differential. Hopefully you will find a small breather on the right side. It will probably need to be removed and cleaned.
