MG MGA - Correct MGA Shelley LJ225 Jack On UK Ebay
Correct Shelley Jack on UK Ebay for the MGA Deluxe 1600, and 1600 Mark II from July of 1960 (car number 93548) to the end of production. They do not come up that often in the UK. I have recorded only 3 UK Ebay sales in the last 2 years. Expect to bid against wealthy Healey owners, with the price likely to go up to £200. http://tinyurl.com/2uselu9 I have no commercial interest in the sale, nor will I be bidding as my car came with the hour glass King Dick. Steve, Ditto - the King Dick is correct for my car. Good to see your site quoted; now acquiring guru status on jacks. Shane |

Shane Oh yes, I had't read the narrative. Only went as far as the photo. It's interesting how many sellers quote my wording. I could write anything against some of the less well known jacks, then give it a year and the words would become gospel! - If it's on the internet it must be true!? Steve |

You wait hours for a bus then a convoy of them comes along. http://tinyurl.com/39bkarm Steve |

Steve, Is this the correct one also on US Ebay from a guy in Berkshire (item 180551800355)? It has just been relisted at the same price because nobody bid on it last time at £63. Very nicely painted I was surprised it didn't get a bid. I was assuming the unrestored one currently at £36 wouldn't go for more than £40-50 and was thinking of bidding..........Mike |

Mike No. It is incorrect for both the Healey and MGA. In fact no one seems to know with what car this particular LJ225 version was supplied. Apart from having the drooping snout, its screw mechanism is too long. It does not fully retract into the cone-shape housing, making it too tall to fit under an MGA axle that has a deflated tyre. Thanks Steve - I could easily have made a bad bid there. Looks as if many people knew the difference hence the absence of bids first time............Mike |

Mike Join the clan. I unwittingly bought one at Beaulieu 4 years ago, believing it was the correct jack for the MGA. It is mine that I have on my Shelley Jack database. http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/shelley_jacks.htm Steve |

Interesting. I have a "broken yoke" LJ225 that came to me with my MGA MkII. Didn't know all that background info until I saw this post and your website, Steve, thanks. Mine is painted grey, which appears to be the original color. I've heard the ones supplied with the Healeys were painted orange like the one on Ebay and the MG jacks were grey. Is that true? Sorry if I missed that somewhere on your website... I've also got a 1961 E-Type with all the original tools EXCEPT for the jack. At one time it was replaced with the later scissor jack. I was under the mistaken impression that my MGA's jack would have been identical and I could swap it around the cars for concours purposes (sigh). Any hints on how to restore the broken yoke? Thanks for putting up such an informative website! |

David Thanks for your comments. Although I am building the Shelley website, I do not claim to be an expert on specifics, although I can claim a good overall knowledge. I have always assumed that the MGA LJ225 jack was orange/red. Perhaps others might care to comment. All information for my database is most welcome. Can I have a photo for my database of your grey jack? Cheers Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Steve, I'd be glad to supply a photo. I'll just post it here when I have a chance to dig out the jack and take a picture, unless you want to send me your email address and I'll send it to you directly. |

Steve, Here is a photo of the jack. Upon closer inspection I realized that there are red flecks showing through some (but not all) of the grey, much like one of the jacks on your site. If you look closely you can see the flecks of red on the "snout" as well as where the grey has been chipped. I've also supplied a picture of the underside, which is all red! Now, I have no idea in what color this jack was originally supplied. I have owned the car since 1988 and received the jack in the condition you see in the picture. I will say that the grey paint looks old and battered and I can't imagine someone took the trouble to paint a red jack grey. So perhaps some of these jacks were painted red then painted grey before they went into a car at the factory? Perhaps they got "shop worn" or were poorly painted to begin with and had to be repainted? Your guess is as good as mine... ![]() |

Here is a picture of the red underside.

Thanks David. What colour is your car? Perhaps a previous owner colour co-ordinated it! It certainly looks like it was originally red which is comforting to know for my research. Cheers Steve |

The first jack went for £208 ($320). That is the highest paid on UK Ebay in the last 2.5 years (start of my recording data) when £135 ($208) was paid. They come up more regularly in the US (5 in the last 2 years) and the prices are generally higher at about £200 ($308). The highest paid was £210 ($323). The second jack is at £62 ($95) with 7 hours to go. Steve |

Steve, My car was originally Iris Blue. It has been painted a darker metallic blue in the past and was red when I bought it in 1988. It is interesting that there are other jacks out there that are grey over red, even in different countries. David |

The second correct MGA jack went for £82 ($126); a bargain for the buyer. There is a rare LJ22 for the AC Cobra on US Ebay by a British vendor. It is a rare jack, but the £484 ($750)asking price does seem a bit steep! Steve |

Talk about all the buses coming at once, yet another MGA jack on UK Ebay, asking £220 ($330): http://tinyurl.com/2vqwczt Checking with vendor to see if his 'original' handle is straight or cranked. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
The vendor has confirmed to me that the jack handle is cranked and is as supplied in its original packing. This supports Barney's research and contradicts Clausager. Steve |

Seems I have a following on Ebay. The following Shelley jack advert made me chuckle. Read the narrative: http://tinyurl.com/37llxld Steve |

Only one stall holder at Beaulieu had an LJ225 MGA jack. At £200 I did not buy it. It's the first one I have ever seen for real. I was surprised how small it was. Steve ![]() |

Any Austin 7 owners out there? I have just identified the Shelley 10DL as belonging to that car. http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/shelley_jacks.htm Steve |
