MG MGA - Correct title for 56 MGA

I recently sold a 56 MGA with a Pennsylvania title.
The vin numbers on the title match the car but the year box was left blank. The buyer went to change the title over in New Jersey but was told he could not transfer with that box blank. The car truly is a 56 with all original vin plates etc. Has any one ever gone thru this? Anyone know what is the best way to correct the problem?
Any help is appreciated.

Probably the best route is to get a Heritage Certificate for the car. This will give you the Vin number, day(s) of manufacture, colour, extras supplied etc.

Have a look here at the British Heritage Centre Website: http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/store/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29783

This might be a better link for a standard certificate:

"was told he could not transfer with that box blank"

He can try to bring various reference manuals which list the serial number/year range. I doubt if a webpage printout will satisfy any DMV. It worked for me correcting the VIN numer many years ago. The Heritage Cert comes from the factory records and a pseudo government agency in charge of those records. it should be accepted. If he can't get things sorted out via the Heritage Certificate, You might try a different DMV office. In cases like these, results vary with different locations/personnel. Last resort is you should be able to request a corrected title with the correct year in your state. Then you could transfer that corrected title to the buyer.

I realize that states have different rules but in many states a car that old doesn't need a title, just a registration. In New York, for example, the registration certificate says "Transferable". To sell the car you simply sign it over to the new owner. On my "59" roadster none of the numbers "match". All I needed was a bill of sale, a signed registration and a "rubbing" of the SN--which, by the way, doesn't match the frame number or the the body SN...:)I've considered ordering a Heritage Certificate using the VIN number just to see what it came from!
