MG MGA - Coupe Dashboard Trim

Hi Guys
Here's a question for you Coupe owners. I've had conflicting opinions on whether the larger diameter beading strip fits between the crash rail and the scuttle panel, or between the dashboard and the crash rail. I notice that on the roadsters the small beading strip goes between the scuttle and the crash rail, to give continuity of the same size beading all around the edge of the cockpit, but on a coupe there is no beading around the edge of the cockpit, so in theory the larger beading could go on top. But which is correct?

David,
If I recall correctly, the bigger one clipped to the top of the dash, and the smaller one went between the rail and the scuttle panel. You can't actually see the lower one, so no big deal!
Peter.

Thanks Peter
That's what I've been told by another Coupe owner, so I guess the factory decided to do it different to the roadster.

This is what Clausager says:

"All cars had coloured plastic piping at the top edge of the facia panel, below the trim roll ("facia piping"), and also behind the trim roll butting up to the scuttle panel ('facia trim roll piping'). The facia piping was was a fatter section than the trim roll piping."

If I read that correctly it is as Peter says - thin at the top and fatter underneath.

Just checked my Mk2 Coupe The larger black piping goes between the dash and crash pad (and is very tight under the crash pad) and the smaller (in my case light blue) between the crash pad and the scuttle

- I didn't want to get this far into the resto and then make a hash of it!

Mr. Jacobs.....
As you are in Bristol, why don't you take a trip down the old A38 to Lower Weare, near Axbridge, and have a chat with Terry Drinkwater at Counsell's Garage.........a real MGA Coupe man!!
J Barnacott

Hello J Barnacott- how are you getting on with JRL? I hope that it's enjoying the Cyprus sun rather than the Somerset damp!! I know Terry quite well, and also John Bird as I go to the same natter.

I can't relate to the terms "scuttle panel" and "crash rail", but I'm interested in this discussion since I will have to trim my coupe dash soon. My car originally had a roadster dash installed, don't understand the reason for that, probably done by a PO. I sourced a used coupe dash, and it had the small piping clipped to the top of the dash. The piping was approx 1/4" dia rubber tube with the "leather" covering, red in this case. The larger trim piece (crash pad?)was not there, but I presume went above the smaller piping. Is that how you guys see the installation? I took a bunch of pictures but I can't find them right now (damn!).

Thanks, George

Hi David,
JRL now sporting a Cyprus number. All "antikas" (classics) are given 'A' numbers over here. Pictured on the cliffs above Aphrodite's Rock - a local beauty spot. Rgds, John B.

Hi John
It looks like its got a smile on its face basking in that glorious sunshine!
George - if it'll help. I'll post a picture on this thread when I've got my dash and crash rail fixed on.

David, the "JRL" dash pic is good, but additional visuals would be appreciated!

Thanks, George

George,
I believe my dash is correct as original. I can send you some pictures. Will you be at the GT in Ottawa in July?

Hey Gerry, guess what, I'm retiring May 30! Looking forward to having Quality Time with the car, but my wife has a few "home improvement" projects in mind, LOL! No real travel plans right now, but you never know.

Yes, if you could post a few dash pics that would be appreciated. Good luck with your car projects!
