MG MGA - Coupe door/window weatherstrip(s)

Another Coupe query. (We really need a parts book dedicated to the peculiarities of the Coupe) Along the top outside edge of the door there is a weatherstrip shown in the parts book- page R.16 #RF31. I have seen this on a couple of doors (not mine, of course), and it appears to be a felt on metal strip which clips to the top of the door edge. Over the outside of the door top edge goes the chrome "finisher", which is held by three small self tapping screws.
However, I have not seen a rubber wiper strip to go against the outside of the glass to prevent water running down inside the door on any doors I've been privilaged to look at. But the parts book has RF32 - "weatherstrip garnish rail". Is this the elusive rubber, and if so how and where does it fit? (The parts book seems to show this piece as being inboard of the glass)

Peter,

there is one strip inside the glass which is nailed onto the wooden rail and one outside which is fitted to the door top and held with some 4 or 5 u-shaped clamps. These clamps are hidden if the chrome finisher is in position.
will try to find pictures...

This picture shows the felt on metal strip you describe. It is held on by 5 special clips. I reused the old ones.

Hi Siggi,
The arrangement of the felt strip on the outer edge and a rubber strip fixed to the door capping wood inside, has been confirmed by a number of people. Strange that the rubber is inside while the felt is outside - it would make sense to have them the other way round.
Also, I have been told that the MGB weatherstrip with a rubber flap can be cut down to fit on the outside of the MGA door. So I'll look at that as a possibility.

Greetings all,

I was surprised also to find there was no rubber "squeegie" style weather strip on the outside of the door top. Make cetain that the drain holes in the bottom of the door are free of rust flakes and other debris as this system of "weatherproofing" does little to prevent water from running down the outside of the door window and continuing to the inside of the door. There was never any rubber weatherstrip on the outer part of the door. Just the felt/metal strip that is clipped on as aforementioned.

As for the inside...as also previously stated, there is a very very thin metal strip tacked to the underside of the wooden top interior rail. Mine still had what was left of the original part and I reproduced this by going to a Lowes store, buying a small roll of metal "flashing", tracing the old part onto that and cutting it accordingly. I used white flashing so I could see my trace more easily. I then went on-line and found a supplier of 1/16" thick felt that had an adhesive backing and I wrapped that, top around to bottom, over the flashing strip and trimmed it to fit the shape of the flashing. It actually turned out to be nearly an exact duplicate of the original part. Beware however, that it is does not attach to the ounderside of the interior wood top rail evenly front to back. You have to place it at a slight angle to ensure it lays directly against the inside of the door glass. Not tightly, but just touching the glass. Otherwise it will bind when rolling the window up and down. Hope this helps. Cheers!
