MG MGA - Deluxe Seat Foams - Urgent !!

Gents.

I have the remains of these so not much to go on.

Can someone tell me if the seat base foams were a moulded job.

Attached is what I purchased from Newton for about £160+

This does not look like enough to just throw a leather cover over.

A photo of the originals would be much appreciated.

Plus your thoughts?

Urgent reply would be appreciated as I get on a flight 1/2 way around the world in 24 hours.

Thanks
Mark

No, those components does not match with the regular foam base used on the MGA´s or B´s!

The "Deluxe" seats for MGAs would take a different foam pad than the "standard" seats. The foam you show looks like it is probably correct. I have no personal experience with "Deluxe" seats, but it seems that there must be more involved than just putting the seat material directly over the foam pad. Perhaps you could check with a shop that does this kind of work for input.

Mark,
That configuration from your image fits more with the back seat, not the base, but there are different backseats configurations, depending the model and year!
R Garcia

Hi Guys,

Yes the back and base are cut slightly differently but they are the same material.
Perhaps this is correct for the back foam but I was under the impression the bottom seat foam was a molded piece of rubber.

Does anyone have a photo of the original deluxe seat foam base for comparison?

Many Thanks
Mark

Mark,

The below link will take you to a picture of the seat foam; although its not an easy document to navigate around in. page 39....Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the Moss Catalogue photo.
I've attached an extract below.

Moss appear to do one part number SFA2004 to cover all four foams required.

Has anyone ordered this part lately and have a photo they could share?

I suspect Moss order them from Newton.

Thanks
Mark

Mark, in the Moss catalogue, did you see the note that says "They do not fit the competition De Luxe seat" in reference to part No. SFA 2004? Lindsay.
Lindsay Sampford

Another thought Mark, if you added your new part to a "standard" foam, would that work? It looks like it would give you that raised cushion around the front and sides of the seat.

Hi Lindsay,

This is way my car looked like in 1983

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/hesterracing/PJB147/SFJan1983.jpg

As you can imagine in 2006 when I purchased there little left of the seats.

Just had a friend purchase some from Victoria British.
He said:

"They appear to be the same as what you have photographed and it doesn't seem like enough to me"

I just measured the Base Foam and its only 40mm thick.

Is 40mm all the original thickness foams were?

Thanks
Mark

Mark, the new seat foams I bought from Moss for my standard seats were well in excess of 6 inches (excuse my imperial!) thick, so I would expect De Luxe foams to be thicker than that. Would an early MGB seat foam perhaps fit the bill? As long as your finished seat is the right shape it doesn't matter much what's beneath the cover. You could add extra bits of foam or indeed trim bits away to achieve the right shape and cushioning, maybe?
Lindsay Sampford

I think from all the pictures of them I have ever seen, I would expect the foam cushions to be thinner than those of the standard seats. It seems to me that the "competition deluxe" seats are more about competition than they are deluxe.

It should also be noted that the deluxe seat is supported by webbing. That will give a cushioning effect reducing the need for the foam to be so thick.
