MG MGA - Desmo style oval mirror

Hi.
Has anyone out there have any experience of these?

I like the look of these and don't want to fit wing mirrors but would like to know if they are any good.

For instance, do they shake so much from road vibration as to be practically useless?

Also, I'm assuming the windscreen support pillar has to be drilled and threaded to fit them?

Chris.

Mr Gyles has a mirror on the pillar that didn't need and special drilling. I'm sure he will pop along soon

Chris,

I fitted one a couple of years ago & have been very pleased, no shake from vibration.

No need to drill windscreen support pillar see Barney’s link

Chris,
I fitted one as shown in the photo. I used one of the original holes in the screen and drilled and tapped another. No shake in use.

As above, they work very well and the windscreen side is the ideal place to put it. I fixed mine with one screw ( you need a longer one) and Araldited the mirror base to the windscreen frame as well. I then cut the head off another screw and Araldited it into the un-used screw hole to make the mirror look like it is held by two screws! I have done thousands of miles in all weathers with it and it hasn't turned on its single fixing screw yet.

I have the mirrors out front over the F. wheels. Convex type and the view is really quite good.

I made an adaptor plate for mine, rather than drill extra holes.

Thanks guys,

They do look really neat.

Now I'll add one of these to my Christmas list.

Just remember one thing. Make sure the screw is not too long or it will go through into the side of the windscreen glass and the result will probably be a cracked windscreen.
Malcolm Asquith

Nice fixing plate Mark. Also, good point that Malcolm makes.

Thanks Steve - not as flowing/curved as I had planned. My skills aren't up to my wishes.

Chris, I have these fitted to my roadster and find them to work fine. Don't vibrate and a good angle of view (for there size) I see your in Herefordshire. I'm in Bromyard your welcome to come and have look if you want.

I have a fellow club member who has these mirrors on his roadster. They look really good and he says they are much more functional than wing mirrors.

When I get to that point in my coupe restoration, I would like to add a similar type of mirror but am not sure how or where to attach them on a coupe. Has anyone ever used this type of mirror on a coupe?

Gday Jim, there are a few versions that attach to your quarterglass . Bob

I have them fitted to my Coupe - drilled with self tappers no vibration and give great coverage of possible blind spots

Hi Paul

Any chance of a photo showing how they are fitted to your Coupe? Many thanks

Paul,
Did you mount them to the vent window frame or to the car body between the windscreen and the door opening? As David requested, can you post some pictures please?

Thanks
Jim

Here's my friend's roadster showing the Desmond mirror on the right-hand side. The bonnet (hood) blocks the left-side mirror but he has them on both sides. The look really nice.

I have tried to post pictures but they were too large!!! for the BBS site apparently I did send David pictures to his e-mail address. The Mirror is mounted on the car body between the windscreen and frame
