MG MGA - Disc brake pads too thick

I have had a set of new Moss UK pads for a few years, and have decided to install them. I've only attempted the RHS so far, but they are too thick to slot into the caliper. I have retracted the piston as far back as it will go by using a G clamp, but it still isn't enough to allow the pad to go in... (the inside one, as I have just managed to get the outside one in). The rotors are relatively new, so the thickness of these adds to the problem. Can the pads be sanded back a fraction, and is it necessary to do both pads? Is there any standard thickness of new pads BTW?

I had the same problem when trying to install the Gold shield brake pads from Moss. I did sand down the pad inorder to get it in but be very carefull not to get a hump in the pad. I did it iwth a belt sander and had a hard time getting it flat.

So no-one has had this problem? ..except GKG

Count me in for this one too. The left side was fine, but the outside pad on the right side caliper wouldn’t fit. Took the best of the old four pads and used it for a while, could then take one of the “new” pads and install it after putting a few miles on it.

I had the problem but solved it with a big pry bar. I pushed the pistons that little bit more and then the pad tapped in!

Thanks Neil, the bar did the trick!
