MG MGA - door closure plate problem

I finally figured out where these parts go, and notice that one does not cover the end of door opening. It won't fit over the end of fender (see image) How serious will this be when I go to mount doors? Any ideas?
Thanks, HJ

Hi Harley. Some how you need to make that panel fit. Perhaps you can gently bend the offending secton a bit. so it slips over. Alternately, perhaps you can carefully grind a bit of metal off the pillar, which would allow the panel to fit on. Im guessing that you purchased aftermarket panels. These sometimes dont fit properly. If you can find used original parts, they will likely fit better. Hoep this helps, Glenn

Hi Mount your doors now. Make closure face and fenders fit doors IN place. You have not much room to play with. I had to cut the closure face twice, it was short to bottom or the lock nob did not fit. Lots of fun. Good luck.

Could you post the same photo without the shut face panel in place?

Also, is the current rear fender position due to trial fitting the door? Is the B post in its original position or have there been modifications made?
John DeWolf

From your picture there appears to be a gap between the front top of the wing and the B post top and therefore I would say that the front of your rear wing needs to be lowered by at least 1/8". I would loosen the wing bolts to do this. Then fit the SFP over the wing flange from the top so that the three screws can be put in. There is a chance now that the bottom of the SFP won't meet the sill and it will have to be cut and bent to match up. I am doing this job now and I have two repro SFPs both of which are poor fits.
It will be a good test of your metal working skills!
Good luck. Mike

As John says, it would be good to see the "B" post without the SFP. The fender looks nearly right at the bottom, but the top looks like it should come forward and as Mike says, down by about an eighth. Possibly rotate the whole fender slightly clockwise? I had similar problems on my car but managed to sort it with a bit of jiggery pokery

"jiggery pokery"...That's a technical term, right?

They do night classes in it here in the UK Andy!

Thanks guys for the good tips. I will send another picture when I get back to the car, and will try some of these ideas.

I hope the white paint in the picture is not your finished top coat. It may be damaged with any required adjustments.

John, This is the way it looks without the panel. I think I need to nudge that fender forward a bit.

As Martin said, "Mount your doors now" that will tell you what is wrong, i.e. door pillar or fender.
Lindsay Sampford

Harley,
The small fender openings or windows must match the pillar windows, the vertical lines of both parts must be at 90 degrees of the horizontal.

If you move the wing forward you will, of course, reduce the rear door gap but maybe the gap now is wide enough to allow for this. When you've mounted the doors you will find out. I'm sure you know that there shouldn't be a gap between the wing flange and the top of the B post but if everything is welded up now I'm afraid you'll have to live with it or start dismantling. Interesting to note that there seem to be three missing holes in your B-post which line up with the three wing flange notches and the three holes in your SFP. The holes have caged or welded 10-32 nuts at the back to take the screws which secure the SFP. You could always drill and use self tappers. Mike

The replacement door pillars I got from Moss didn't have the captive nuts for the SFP screws fitted, so I drilled them and used chrome plated raised countersunk self tappers. You would never know they weren't the "real thing" unless you unscrewed them!
