MG MGA - drive-shaft not compatible

I finally got the motor and transmission out of my 1956 MGA and upon comparison to the rebuilt tranny I bought last fall it is not compatible. The rebuilt transmission was advertised for a 55-57 mga with sliding yok. I believe this transmission was probably from a 1600 mga. Is anyone aware of a used drive-shaft that would fit the new transmission? Is it possible or a big job to switch the back part or extension from one transmission to the other?

My transmission that I took out is on the top with the original drive-shaft, the rebuilt one is on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a drive shaft that may fit. It is the original that came out of my 57 MGA Coupe HML 43/31994. I installed a T9 five speed and it came with a new drive shaft. I'm not sure how to tell if mine will work for you.

The OD of the 3rd motion shaft (male splines) coming out of my original transmission is 1.06".

The OD of the yoke-sleeve assembly (part number 17H3806) is 1.3785" at full diameter. The end is tapered and is 1.32" OD at the tip end.

The ID of the yoke-sleeve assembly is 1.1045".

These measurements were taken with my digital calipers. My calipers will not reach deep enough into the yoke-sleeve assembly to measure the female splines.

Let me know if you think this will work. If you want it, I'll sell it for $150.00 + shipping cost. It has new u-joints.

Your transmission is from an early 1500, they changed to the internal seal for the later 1500s.

Thanks Jim and Mike for responding.

Jim, if you still have your original transmission could you take a picture of the end where this driveshaft fitted to. Thanks, Norb

The parts are interchangeable only as a complete set. Gearbox mainshaft, tail housing and propshaft have to be change as a set. Disassembling two gearboxes to replace the mainshaft is a royal pain. Better to get the propshaft that matches the gearbox you want to use.

Norb,
Here's the picture you requested. The change was made starting with car number 20753. My car number is 31994.

Let me know if you think it will work for you.

Thanks, Barney, for your advice which is always welcomed and very useful and Jim for your 2nd. picture.

Jim, the 2nd. part of my message didn't come through. I'm interested in your driveshaft but I will have to do more research, I checked out the measurements you posted and they seemed to check out with my transmission but I'm confused that my original driveshaft slipped over the yoke and this one seems to be internal and then there are some that have the flange on the transmission. I didn't realize there were so many variations for the A. I guess it would help if I saw how the driveshaft fit into the transmission end. Thanks, Norb

Norb,
Here is another picture of the end of my original drive shaft. Maybe this will help.
