MG MGA - Drop link position

I have now mounted my anti-roll bar to the frame extension (old style top mount) and now have to drill and reinforce the front A-arms. I have checked all the 4 possible extreme motions of the suspension (up, down, R and L full lock) and it seems a position about 1-1/4" inboard of the outboard hole for the spring pan mount is about right.
Can someone confirm this position ? I'm doing a bit of guessing without actually drilling.

I don't know if the hole position varies with the type of roll (sway) bar. I have the MGB style underslung type. The hole on my A arm is 2.5" inboard of the outer hole.

Steve, I was mystified because I could not see the outer spring pan bolt on your photo.
Then I discovered that the pan has an extra bolt hole, see pic, presumably for the drop link - the bolt size is right. So it looks like if you have the drop link, you don't need the outer pan bolt as well.

I just checked the motion with the front arm off, using the drop link hole in the pan, and all is well. So that hole is my template.

Hi Steve,

I also have the underslung MGB style swaybar. Could you please help me with a photo of the bar mounted under the frame. I am wondering where to drill the holes in the frame for the PU-bush. Or perhaps this is to be done after the car is sitting on her wheels again to get all things in the right place? (Yes it is a "Her", it will be my wifes car, 18V-engine and a Moss Supercharger. She will probably drive around with a smile all the time!)
Do you have any idea of what is to prefer, the swaybar over the frame or under the frame?

Anders, I think if you have the MGB style bar, it will probably not work in the top mount position. The MGA bar is bent specially to avoid interferences.

Does the attached photo help?

It's a long time since I fitted mine, but I seem to recall that the drilling for the bush brackets was the last thing I did. I connected it all up and then placed the brackets where the bar naturally lay.

Thanks Steve,

yes this may help when coming to put on the swaybar. I bought this underslung swaybar from Brown & Gammons 10 years ago when starting to dismantle the car. Then there was a wife, two kids and a new house. Now finally I am to start putting all parts together.
And I believe that it is better to wait to drill these holes in the frame until all other parts is in place. Have you compared this underslung style swaybar to the original MGA-style one that is mounted over the frame. Is there a difference? Mine is a 1600 Mk1 so I have the right frame for the original one but as I got the underslung one after advice from B&G I will use it!

No, I have never made the comparison between the 2 systems, just the before (no sway bar) and after. I went for the easiest to fit option for a car already on the road. It has worked fine for me.
