MG MGA - End fittings - fuel line pump to carb

Hi Guys,

I'm making up a new steel fuel pipe, the one which runs from the pump to the rear carb. Can you please confirm that the connection at the carb end is male? Moss sells this pipe with two female ends and then you need to buy a male-male union (this then connects to the braided hose to the rear carb). I'm sure this is not correct (but for some reason I have one of these unions floating around, so I'm confused)

Clausager shows both situations (but maybe only one using the union, p53).

I'm sure this has been covered, but couldnt find it in the archives. Please confirm, thanks!

Item 41 (376-300 UNION) has a male thread, but the other end is soldered onto the metal pipe.

Thanks Barney!

But surely that union is not original. The picture attached (taken from your website showing John's cracked flexible hose) shows the soldered male fitting to the steel fuel line (ie. no union). This seems to be much more common than the soldered female end + union type of fitting that Moss sells. What do other people have?

Cheers,
Ben

Ben - I have not been able to find any Male end for a 5/16" pipe as was originally placed on the fuel lines for the MGA and MGBs. I have made my own fitting by purchasing a standard union, drilling out one end to 5/16 and soldering it to the fuel line. If you have a metal lathe (or know someone with one) the drilled out end can be turned to remove the external threads. Cheers - Dave

Ben, -- Your picture does indeed show the original fitting, soldered to the pipe. I'm pretty sure this is what Moss is calling 376-300 UNION. Seems kind of expensive for a screw machine part, but if that's the only place to get it, who's to complain about Moss taking the initiative to have the thing made special?

Barney - That union, 376-300 is the one that I have used on numerous occasions and it does have threads on both ends (see attached picture), but one end is already drilled out to accept 5/16 OD fuel line. I was thinking that I had needed to drill one end out, but it looks like I just had to have the threads machined off. Cheers - Dave

Thanks David and Barney,

So, perhaps the Moss fuel pipe supplied with two female ends and male-male adaptor is a method of getting around the unavailability of the male end (I wonder what other vendors have?).

But look what I just found! In the picture on the left is the original male end from my car and on the right is the adaptor. David thanks, you have a good solution - when you machined that down it would'nt be too different.

How about one of these!:
