MG MGA - fender lower edge attachment
I have noticed on my 'A' that the lower border of both front fenders seem to be unattached to the structure of the car. If I grasp the lower edge of either one, I can pull the edge outward an inch or two, especially approaching the wheel well opening. Where would this normally be attached? Welded, or screwed? 2nd question...I see that Moss sells a trim piece for the sheet metal edge along the lower border of the sill and (I guess) the lower edge of the front fender. The few cars that I have seen since browsing through the Moss catalog do not seem to have this trim. Does anyone use it? How does it attach? Thanks, Rick |

The outer fenders attach to the bottom edge of the inner body sill. The trim strip attaches in the same place after the fenders are secured. For trim strip attachment fasteners see here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd110.htm For body sill repairs in detail see here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/restore/restore1.htm See trim strip installation half way down the page here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/restore/rt633.htm |

hi rick The bottom front of fender is attached to the bottom splash plate. There suppose to be bracket for it. The cover strip at the bottom of fender will be few inches short. That is as they were. I asked here before. Martin |

I think I'd put it the other way around. After the fender is secured to the sill, the bottom of the splash plate is attached to the fender to stabilize the splash plate. The splash plate alone will not fully stabilize the fender if there is no inner sill. When the trim strip is installed it leaves the front hole exposed so the splash panel can be removed without removing the trim strip. |

The trim strip came to be, sometime after the first 1500's were introduced. They were originally painted body color and not left as bare aluminum. This may be why you don't see them in the photos. My 1500 was built Sept of '56 and did not have the trim strip. Still doesn't. |

I concur as my 1500 was built in Oct. '55 and without trim strips. |

According to Clausager, sill finishers were added September 1956 at car number 19949. |

Does anyone know a part number for the oval flat washers and the screws that go under the finishing strip? These should b the same as the valance screws and washers but I cannot find a Moss part # for them. Thanks, Christopher |

I believe Clarke Spares & Restorations has them. |

Moss Mo. 313-305. It is on the Body Panels page under Mounting Hardware. http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29234 |

Is there a specific location(s) for attaching the front fenders to the inner splash panel? |

These rectangular flat washers go on the screws securing the bottom edge of front and rear fenders to the bottom sdge of body sill. If properly aligned they may coincide with the special spring head studs securing the sill trim strips. The front splash panel attaches to the fender bottom edge with one screw located ahead of the trim strip, therefore exposed where you can see the screw head. This allows R&R of the splash panel without removing the trim strip. |
