MG MGA - Filler cap

I can't figure out how the filler cap works. I can see the groove in the pipe where the cork seal has to go, and figure that the outer inverted disc fits in there. There is some latitude as you assemble it all to get that disc off centre. Anyway I can't get it to close.
How tight is the clip that holds on the lid supposed to be? Should it allow up and down motion? And how does the clip at the top right catch.
Finally I don't see an air hole.
Help!!

Art,
Your clip is broken. This is quite common. It should extend outside the cap, and has "LIFT" stamped on it. This extension makes it easier to pull open the cap as the clip is quite tight in the groove in the tube.
I believe you can buy the clip separately from SF or MOSS.
The cap should be chrome plated.
The air hole is in the screw in the center, I believe, as there is no obvious hole.
The rubber around the tube is usually black when new.

Ok thanks Peter for both responses. I do have to lower the tank again to get the metal retainer over the neck, but I can do that. And I will cut a seal from rubber to fit the situation.
Thanks for the info about the clip. The rubber is red because the previous owner sprayed just about everything without masking - switc knobs, harness, you name it! I will get a new ring.

Before you undo the screw to replace the clip, put a rag into the filler pipe, because otherwise you will inevitably drop the screw down the neck and have to order and wait till a new one arrives! The rag catches the screw and allows you to complete the job in a few minutes without any cursing as the screw disappears forever into the tank.

No problem Dominic, the pipe is not yet connected. But I know the phenomenon.

As far as I can tell the petrol cap on the MGA is made of stainless steel not chrome, at least mine is.

Peter, there is no air hole in the screw!
Art Pearse

My original one is stainless too.

OK, figured out the breathing. When the cap is on, the disc compresses the spring and opens a gap above it around the centre pillar. The disc is a loose fit around this pillar.
