MG MGA - FNT WHEEL BEARING REMOVAL HELP?

I think I might have done some serious damage!
I am disassembling the front end and replacing bearings, rubbers etc.

I checked with my local MG workshop prior to attempting to remove the large castellated nut behind the knock-offs.

All well and good, removed the spilt pin etc and used the appropriate sized hex socket.

Now it gets interesting- I used a LOT of force to get some movement- (and I mean a lot) now the nut AND the shaft all rotate together- not good.

What have I done and what do I need to do now?
The illustration attached shows part number 30 and part 43 that now turn as ONE
I also attempted subsequently to remove part 24 - that also appears to be well held and heavy force wont budge thta either

I am wondering if part 24 should have been removed first?
and also wondering if I have managed to sheer the shaft?

Sorry about that!
"remembering that the stub axle on the left-hand side of the car has a left-hand thread"
The stub axle or spindle being part #30.
The spindle is one piece and removing steering arm #24 would in no way influence things.
If it #30 turns with the nut #43, then you must have sheared it, but I've never heard of anyone doing so. IF it is sheared, the end with nut should simply fall off in your hand, so it must be broken someplace other than at the base of the thread section, which is where you'd expect it to break. And if it broke somewhere else, it must have been cracked, and you may have avoided a disastrous accident by your error.
At this point it should be possible to pull the hub off with some combination of pieces coming with it, but this is odd.

Good luck,

It is hard to believe that you could shear off item #30.
Are you sure that you have not just stripped the thread? Check very carefully to see if item #30 really is turning.
As FRM says the left side has a left hand thread. Is it the left side?
Did your "MG workshop" warn you of the left hand thread? If they did not I would be going somewhere else in future.

Yes, its turning WITH the shaft and just wont drop out or respond to upward pressure etc-

The garage is really a "restoration/repaint ' shop ( they send major work out ) and I guess I am to blame in that I just assumed that all threads - apart from the named knock-on spinners turned normally- not having a shop manual and not finding any reference online- I just assumed-

There was no bang or any indication of a sheer etc, it just got progressively easier to turn- after a lot of effort to gain a first turn. All very frustrating as I cant see how to now remove the spindle

Any ideas
M THOMPSON

Found the problem- a stripped nut.

Resorted to scribing across the top of both nut and shaft and rotating the nut-

Now all I have to do is remove the nut! and buy a new shaft

Any ideas?

You should never do these jobs without reading the Workshop Manual first. It is available online at Barney's site:

You have not answered the question. Was it the left side? If so, you should be able to still wind the stripped nut off clockwise, then remove the hub. You could be lucky the damage may all be in the nut thread. Then, before you go any further, seek more advice. One thing at a time.
