MG MGA - f;oor board seal

can anyone recomend a good sealing compound to use when re fitting the floor panels, Vin
Vin Rafter

I've just done mine with black butyl rubber, Vin. It was the sealant that the PO used 20 years before, and it appeared to have done an excellent job. No drying or cracking--still elastic after all that time. Others have been happy with a paintable silicone sealant, so I suppose there may not be just one good solution.

Hi Vin,

I've used a window sealing mastic (nice and black and never goes off), although others might suggest a silicone sealant such as you'd use in the bathroom, but black.

cheers,

The others are quite correct with the original black look and quality products etc. I have to admit that I went the non-standard route and applied wood sealant, followed by marine quality varnish to my home made marine ply floor boards. They have stood the test of time fine so far (12 years).

Sorry, I think I misunderstood your post. I presume you are looking for a seal between the boards and rails. I assumed you meant the covering for the total surface.

There again, seems I am different. I did not use any seal. Just plonked the boards straight on the rails and bolted down. Never had any problems in 12 years. Took them out a few years ago and had a look. No inward leaks, no deterioration.

Just use a good quality Black Silicon caulk. Seals, perserves, and you for the most part cannot see it.

I have just used Arbormast windscreen sealant. Bob West recommends a Tex windscreen sealant but I couldn't find that. An auto windscreen centre gave me two tubes for nothing here in Oxford. It worked well and doesn't set and doesn't set so you can remove the boards later.
