MG MGA - Fron Stub Axle

I need to clean up (rethread) the first 3-4 threads on my left side front axle spindle. I believe the threaded portion of the spindle is 3/4 16 TPI.

Has anyone out there done this? Will a standard 16 TPI die work, or is there a special die for left hand thread?

Snap-On tools make a rectangular (four sided) file that has 8 different threads on it. You use the file with the correct threads and file it back and forth with a couple of good threads to help align it. It comes in both metric and SAE threads. I have used these for over 30 years and they remain in good condition.

Another way to correct the threads is to buy a good quality nut to fit, then cut it through with a hacksaw. spread the opening and slide the nut onto a good threaded area. Then instal a hose clamp to close the gap and slowly rotate the cut nut onto the bad portion. carefully used it works well.

Yes, you need a special left handed die for left handed threads! The nut trick described above works great and is a lot cheaper for one time use than buying a large left handed die you will likely not be using again anytime soon - provided the threads are not so buggered up as to really need chasing with a die. Go slow and use lots of lubricant working your way off of the threads carefully.

Thanks for the nut suggestion I like the less expensive approach. Silly question: Must use a LH threaded nut correct?

Must use a LH threaded nut correct? CORRECT!

The first few threads, all the way to the cotter-key hole, on the axle stub provide no function when the nut is in place. The threads in this area can be virtually non-existant and not present a problem. This should no be the goal but just an indication of how un-important they are. I would just use a sharp-edged 3-sided file to chase each thread enough to get the nut started. I have a few sets of modeler's files that I use for this. A set of 12 can be had for a few bucks at the flea-market or Harbor Freight. I too have one of those thread files that Sandy talked about. It is equally good and like the 3-sided file, works on both LH and RH threads.

Of course any of these suggestions may leave metal shavings in or around the bearings. Clean work practices are required.

Chuck,

Your comment about the threads is much appreciated. These spindles are on a set of swivel pins and links, which I plan to bead blast and completely refurbish. Once completed these will be installed in my car.
