MG MGA - Front hub inner bearing stuck

Hello,
I am in the process of replacing the front brake discs/rotors on my 1600 Mk II. I have pulled the hub but the inner bearing was left on the stub axle. The outer ring and ball bearings rotate freely and smoothly but the inner ring seems to seized onto the stub and Will not budge. The oil seal behind the inner bearing looks in good condition.
I'd be grateful for any advice. Many thanks
Cheers
Richard

Thanks Del, much appreciated.

Looking at it there doesn't appear to be any rust there so it should come off Ok
Try boiling up your kettle and pouring hot water on the bearing, try and point the flow in the gap where the balls are so that it heats the inner section of the bearing.Have a piece of cardboard or something covering the stub axle to stop the hot water getting on it.
When you think it's got hot,--empty kettle, try levering it off.
Use a couple of screwdrivers or if you have a good heavy pair of gloves you can get all your fingertips-both hands, behind the bearing and lever with your knuckles against the backing plate----it will be hot enough to burn without gloves
I use hot water assembling G/box bearings etc and it really makes a big difference
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion Willy. I'll try that first.

No luck removing the bearing using boiling water unfortunately. I cannot understand why it is seized solid. As It is a perfectly good bearing I am loathe to destroy it in order to remove it but I guess that is the route I'll have to go. Cheers

Richard,

Removing these bearing can be a problem. Why you Englishmen made the tolerances so tight is beyond me. (Just kidding). All you have succeeded in thus far is cocking the bearing on the spindle which will make removal very difficult. You might find a length of pipe with which you can drive the inner race back on to the spindle and start from scratch,. I usually use 2 ladyfoot bars (google them and you will see what they are) using the backing plate bolts 180 degrees part as a fulcrum to apply equal pressure to both sides of the bearing and it will release. Usually, I then somewhat relieve either the spindle with some mechanics sandpaper or hone the ID of the bearing with a break cylinder hone,. It should be a push fit.

Gregory, thanks. I had tried using screw drivers to lever the bearing as you describe. The lady foot bars will hopefully give better leverage. Thanks again.
