MG MGA - Front Shocks .........

Hello MG friends, it’s Mike from Brussels Belgium again with another request......
What exact type of tool do I need to compress the front springs in order to safely remove the front shock absorbers of my MGA? (Picture if possible)
The tool store in my neighborhood has numerous different types of these tools, so with your help I can purchase the correct one.
Thanks again friends........

I lifted the front end and placed on axle stands. I then slackened the spring pan 4 retaining bolts a little. Then with the a wooden block with a groove cut to match the inside edge of the spring pan I lifted sufficiently to allow the 2 inner spring pan bolts to be removed. Then lowering allowed the spring pan to tilt down on the 2 outer bolts releasing all the spring tension. The spring can then be removed.

No special tools.

Here are the steps to follow from Barney's website - https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/suspensn/fs128.htm

If you're just removing the shocks and not the coil spring, you don't have to take anything off of the spring pan.

Agreed, if it's only the shocks then you can lift the suspension one side at a time and remove the shock without issue. The spring is not being held by the shock, only by the spring pan and cross member. Lift, remove shock, replace shock, lower. The jack should not be placed on the lower trunion because if will make the king pin want to swing away when you release it fro the shock. Lift by the spring pan.

Should have said also to make sure the spring is compressed at least a little before releasing the shock. Lifting from the back of the pan as pictured above is correct for removing the spring but doesn't give much leverage, so lift from farther out.
