MG MGA - front wing bolts

Tried to find in the archives a post defining the bolts used in front wing attachment. I remember the bolts were given numbers left side and right side, and may have been information supplied by M. J. Moore. I have found posts referring to these bolt numbers but I haven't been able to find the original posted information. Does anyone else remember this?

Thanks,
George

Jeez, I hope that Mike Ellsmore's "pedantic" friend doesn't see this..LOL.

Hi George

No I don't remember, and would find it pretty amazing if it were true.

This was not a factory compilation of wing bolts being assigned numbers. It was put together by a contributor to this board as an aid to fitting the front wing bolts, and I had found it useful in that regard, just can't locate my copy now.

There is a nuts and bolts overview on the MGA Register Holland Website, which I found quite useful as I am in the process of reassembling my MGA.

Some time ago, I bought a large quantity of the 5/16th UNF fender setscrews in stainless steel along with matching oval stainless-steel washers.
However, I never fitted them because I was advised that it would not be a good idea to mix stainless-steel screws with the mild steel captive nuts because they could chemically bond together which would make them very difficult to unfasten in the future.

I have wondered though about just fitting the stainless steel oval washers to replace the rusted mild-steel washers that are on the car now.

Does anyone know if these are likely to have a similar chemical reaction problem?

Cheers

The surface of stainless steel is basically chromium oxide, pretty inert. I would think that hot dipped galvanised washers would be the best, as they would provide sacrificial protection. I dont think stainless screws would bind to the carbon steel nuts. Use lube such as copper or lead loaded grease.

I have the spreadsheet that RA Guy referenced (Barney also has that spreadsheet). That refers to numbered locations of bolt holes on the front clip related to fender installation. Perhaps the person who prepared that created the number scheme. In any case, I have figured out what I needed to know with the help of that, and can now proceed with fender installation. See my new thread!

In regard to Colyn's question, yes, I believe stainless screws to carbon steel nuts is not a good idea (galling problem). I recommend Todd Clarke (CSR) for fasteners. They have the correct head markings and pointed ends. I painted all bolt heads before installation and touched up as necessary. The bodies were painted assembled so most body bolts were body color.

stainless to carbon steel does not gall. SS to SS can
