MG MGA - fuel guage

my 57 MGA fuel gauge reads a little less than 1/2 full when empty. I assume I need to pull the sending unit and adjust the float? Any thoughts from the knowledge base of MGA's? Thanks in advance. Lots to do this winter but a great car!

NK,
it might be a question of calibrating the fuel gauge, see here http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/fg_06.htm
Check the pages on Barney's site pertaining to fuel gauge and I'm sure you will find the answer to your problem.

Thanks for the information. It gives me a starting point.

Check resistance of the sending unit first. Should be about 70-ohms when full, 0-ohms when empty, and roughly linear in between. Fairly often someone has installed incorrect sending unit with wrong resistance range, or a new replacement sending unit may be defective (lots of them are junk these days). No sense fiddling with the gauge if the sending unit is whacked.

If the sender looks okay, then disconnect the sender wire from the "T" terminal on the gauge and use a couple of 68-ohm resistors to test or calibrate the gauge. Info on using resistors starts here:

I think the previos owner messed with the sending unit float a few times. I guess I need to try a few things. The tank has to be near empty to pull the sending as I hear. Thanks for your help and if you find yourself in Green Bay please feel free to stop by.

With half tank of fuel, jack up right side, remove RR wheel and sender unit. Fuel flows to left side and will not run out with half tank of fuel.

NK Nance, thats a really great setup in your garrage. Love the Red Bugeye. I'm in Oshkosh with a white 1956 MGA and I gave my son in St.Paul a 1960 red Bugeye. I have a few extra fuel gauges if you need one.

Tom thanks for the note. I have two daughters in Madison so I come by your area a lot. I will let you know about the fuel gauge and thanks for the offer.
