MG MGA - Fuel leak from sender
Hi all Any tricks for stopping fual leaking from the fuel sender. It does seem a silly place to put the sender. However. I have replaced the original cork gasket for a super-duper one from Brown and Gammons but it is still weeping. It is better than it was but still smells of petrol in the garage and damp on the side of the tank. B&G want to sell me some sealant but it was £30 a tube, I hope there is another way. Thanks |

Moss sell a set of screws with petrol resistant nylon washers which are worth it as you clearly should never use spring washers as these give a route for petrol to leak through, this sounds obvious but many have made this mistake. Also I have used Hylovar AF (Advanced Formulation) gasket sealant that Moss recommend/sell as it is resistant to petrol, it is widely available elsewhere. Whatever you do don't experiment with sealants as most are solvable in petrol and will dissolve and then block you pipes/pump, I have done this in the past!! You are right that it is silly design. Paul's advice in mind - petro-patch and the glue that seals it will work around gaskets - and last for decades until disturbed. |

Hi Use a cork gasket, no sealant required. I made my own about 10 years and 100,000 klm ago without any problems. If you make your own gasket, ensure the screw holes in the gasket are a snug fit around the screws. Russell |

Make sure that the sender is not leaking from the gasket at the sender wire connection. If it is leaking there you would have to dismantle the sender using the small cover and remove the connection bolt and use something like Hylomar to seal the bolt and gasket and re-assemble. Much easier to do on the bench , but can be done while installed in the tank. I am a believer in cork for the gasket (sender to tank). ... CR |

I always used to use cork but changed away from it last time as I have been told on this BBS that it is vulnerable to ethanol in petrol. Paul |

I made one out of leather almost 15 years ago and it continues not to leak. Pretty simple fix. |

I cut my own using a cork one as an example (cork has always leaked for me, even with sealant). I changed to a gas resistant paper gasket and with a tiny bit of sealant, it has not leaked in 5 years. |

There is an updated gasket available for the tank, but this doesn't solve the electrical post leaking which is the usual culprit. http://mg-parts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=462_472_1452_2131&product_id=2482 |

Hi All, Many thanks, I have ordered from Moss the nylon washers and Hylomar AF. I will let you know how I get on. |

Scarborough Faire sells a gasket made of VITON, and she guarantees it will not leak. Peter. |

The gasket currently sold by Moss (at least in the US) is also viton. |
