MG MGA - Fuel Sending Unit Question

My fuel guage reads full all the time now. I suspect the sending unit. It goes to E when key is turned off. Could I just have a bad connection where the wire connects to the lead on the outside, or does bad connection = reads empty all the time?

Dennis - Either the sending unit is bad or the line from it to the gage is grounded somewhere along it's length. Cheers - Dave

AMEN - let us know when you find it and what kind of incantations you had to use to make it work ;) Cheers - Dave

Dennis It will also behave like that if the gauge has been damaged internally.

that was a brilliant comment steve, i wish i had thought of it!
the fuel guage in my car was an after market modern one which always showed full regardless of the actual fuel level. i went through the checklist on barneys website and confirmed that the wiring was ok. i then replaced the guage with an original mga one and now the guage shows full until there are approx 3 gallons remaining in the tank when it rapidly drops to zero as these are used up.(at least it now warns me to fill up soon!) i think i have a modern repro sender fitted and like everyone else im waiting for someone to make new ones that really work.
check out barneys web site on the subject dennis, im sure it will help
best of luck

Dennis - Disconnect the wire from the sending unit and then turn on the ignition. If the gage remains on empty, then the sender is bad (shorted to ground). If the gage goes to full, then either the gage is bad or the wire from the tank to the gage is grounded somewhere along its length, Finally, remove the wire from the tank at the gage and try again - it it still reads full, the gage is bad, if it remains at empty, thn the wire is at fault. My guage was reading full all the time checked the wiring all apearead OK. I then adjusted the guage as per Barneys site ( moving the magnets with the two resistors) and now the guage reads full with a full tank and goes to half full when I have 4 gallons left (checked with dip stick) Not perfect but much better a bit of a fiddle to do the adjustments and very small movements of the magnets are required to make the adjustments. Very detailed instructions on Barneys site
