MG MGA - Fuel tank sender
Can anyone recommend a supplier of fuel gauge sender unit which actually works ? I have had 2 new ones fail almost immediately. (Yes-the wiring is OK ! ) |

You can try to get an original Morris Minor one (not a repro!), with a small tweak of the float wire it is identical. Not common but easier than MGA. |

RH, theres a new morris minor unit on e-bay at the moment, but I think its a repro. Whats wrong with a repro? - I guess its the usual story etc. |

Yes, you can see here. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/fuel/fs108.htm |

I used a dipstick for 2 years until I found a good original on ebay. Regards Dave ![]() |

This is one of those items that the vendors should refuse to sell. Like many others the repo I installed in my car worked for about 2 weeks. |

Any recommendations on who can do a quality rebuild of an original? |
Jeff Bennett |
I think John Twist at University Motors has been rebuilding these for some time. He's the guy who turned me onto the fact that "All of the currently available parts and such junk". |
Barney Gaylord |
John has a great way with words doesn't he? I sent him a note last night asking for his advice. I believe he told me last year that he doesn't have the "touch" to work on parts that small. I'll post his response when it arrives. |

Jeff, give Joe Curto a call. I am pretty sure he did mine for $80.00 |

OK - I did some research on who can rebuild the original unit. John Twist at University Motors does rebuild the unit and charges approx. 1 to 1.5 hours of labor. (www.universitymotorsltd.com) Nisonger Instruments (www.nisonger.com) will do the rebuild for $115. Following is their email to me: "The cost to rebuild your A Fuel Sender is $115 plus shipping. All of our rebuilds are calibrated to original factory specifications and are guaranteed for one year. Nisonger has been the exclusive U.S. Warranty and Service Center for Smiths & British Jaeger Instruments since 1949; nobody knows more about these gauges then us! Our current turnaround time is about 4 weeks." I'm sure either will do a great job. Mine is being shipped out today. I'll post a note once I get it back and installed. FYI - Joe Curto does not offer rebuild services for the fuel sender. |
Jeff Bennett |
Jeff, You are correct. I used Nisonger and they did a great job. |
