MG MGA - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Install

I am about to install a new Moss fuel level sending unit in a new Moss tank. I noticed on the original sender there is a small fiber tab just behind the power wire post. The new sender unit does not have this tab. I assume it is there to keep the power wire from shorting out against the tank.....should I be pulling the old one off to reinstall on the new sender...?

The new sender comes with a(new improved according to Moss) rubber gasket to install between the sender and tank and mentions to use Hylomar to seal it........I have also heard that you should only use cork gaskets in this location or you will have leaks.......anybody ..........Tom

Thomas,
I had much trouble trying to put a Moss replacement sender into an original tank. It just would not fit -- for details see Barney Gaylord's site about that.
I used an original eventually and also a cork gasket (from Moss) with plenty of Blue Hylomar particularly on the threads of the screws. Touch wood no leaks after 1 year.

Use a cork one, they last a lot longer. Rubber parts are always a bit suspect from Moss

Thomas,

The first time about 5 years ago I used a cork gasket covered with sealant, together with sealant on the threads...and no leaks.

Recently (June this year) the tank sender was removed and replaced. On this occasion I made a cork gasket about 1/16 inch thick, used a small leather punch about 2/3rd the screw diameter and no sealant....4,000 miles later no leaks. From memory Barny's site mentions the use of cork gasket without sealant.

Thomas, I don't remember if the sending unit I got from Scarbourgh Faire had the tab or not so can't help with that. The Moss tank I bought with the scarbourgh sending unit and a Cork washer has worked excellently for me. The only additional sealing I had to do was the threads of the mounting screws. I used Permatex high temp thread sealer Item # 59214n for that and have had zero leaks.

A word of warning about sealing sending units. An aquaintance of mine had a plug of silicone rubber block his fuel line. It appears that silicone was used to seal the sending unit and this plug was pushed out when the screws were inserted. Devil of a thing to find..in the pouring rain...on the way to GT33...

I have decided to use the cork gasket which I bought from Moss and not the black rubber one which came with the sending unit...the rubber one looks great and fits well but I have had many long time MGA owners tell me CORK is the way to go. I plan to use hylomar to seal the (6) attachment screws. The sending unit from Moss fits the Moss replacment tank without any clearance problems.......Tom

When I was over at Bob West's workshop recently, his mechanic was repairing a fuel leak from a brand new Scarbourgh Faire sender unit. The fuel was not leaking from the cover gasket but through the electical connector at the end of the housing. The problem was easily solved, but I mention it as something else to check. The attached photo from Barney's site shows the connector in question.

Steve
How did he solve the problem as I believe that is where the leak on my new Moss unit is.

I just put one in and used Hylomar blue sealer at all opening. If you pull all 4 or 5 layers of the post apart you can seal the post pretty well. I have had good luck with HYLOMAR when sealing areas exposed to gas and oil........have not filled the tank with fuel yet to see if it leaks or not....Tom

I bought a new sending unit from Moss and after reading all the negitive info on this site I decided to clean up my original one and use it and a cork gasket not the rubber one Moss sent with the unit.
