MG MGA - Gary Kemm in Melbourne

Gary, a chap in Sydney is looking for some info on an Australian CKD car...have a look at the MGE website.

Gary
Wouldn't it just be easier to have a look and see what number is stamped in the chassis in front of the seat
William Revit

Hi Gary (in Queensland),
Noted and done.
William (in Tasmania)
Australian assembled CKD MGA's did not have the chassis number stamped on the chassis rail in front of seat.
Garry Kemm

Well there you go, I thought they were all stamped---you learn something every day--
Cheers
William Revit

Yes, took me by surprise initially. The numbers and letters were stamped in at Abingdon by the chassis welding teams. However, a little investigation shows that the Australian chassis was supplied in component parts and Australian welders assembled them on their own jigs - hence no numbers.

Some Australian assembled cars did have the chassis number stamped on the chassis at the left hand side front wheel arch just behind the shock mount, it can be seen through the wheel arch. It appears to have been a random stamping as some have it and others do not.

CKD MGA chassis were sent to Australia fully welded and assembled as far as I know. However the bodies were supplied as component parts and assembled on jigs by Pressed Metal Corporation, Enfield, Sydney.
The chassis number stamping on the chassis member just behind the shock mount is believed, but not proven, to have been done by some, but not all State Motor Registration branches.

I have a PowerPoint presentation Compiled by Steven Hill, Perth Western Australia. Attached is the relevant slide.

Steve, That PowerPoint was created many years ago and needs to be updated as it contains a number of errors.
CKD chassis were fully assembled at Abingdon and dispatched to Australia, four per shipping pack. Refer to attached Factory period photo, which can also be found in David Knowles' new book, MGA - The Revolutionary MG.

A definitive article, which was written for a magazine at the time the CKD MGA were being assembled at Enfield, Australia is at the link:

This article and the photographs were taken at the factory in Enfield when the CKD cars were being assembled.

That PowerPoint slide is quite ambiguous. It can be construed in about 3 ways. Just shows how careful one has to be in sentence construction when describing historic processes.
