MG MGA - Gaskets

I have several oil pan gaskets that have shrunk slightly and will not fit. I have seen references to soaking them in water to expand them to their original size. My questions are I assume you install them while still damp, and if so, do they dry out ok without promoting corrosion and what effect does the damp gasket have on sealer?
Thanks,
Scott

Scott, I have soaked gaskets in water to recover from shrinkage, but I always install them after they are dried out completely.

A new gasket is $3.15 from Moss...

New gaskets can be shrunk. A cookie sheet and some boiling water allow the gasket to return to normal size. Once the gasket is the proper size lay it on the pan and insert all the bolts backwards and let it dry. If you put it on wet it is easier to over tighten and cut. Personally I prefer Toyota FIGP part #00295-00130. Used properly the pan will NEVER leak.

Del, 2 new gaskets were supposed to be here today, supplier screw up, so I am back to using the gasket in my conversion set or I loose another week. RJ, what is the Toyota gasket?
Scott Shirk

A tube of black goo of the finest quality.
Toyota has used it exclusively for about 15 years. Earlier cars that used to use gaskets get FIPG so we only do them once.
