MG MGA - Girling Spanner

I am clearing out my garage in preparation for a move. I came across this old Girling spanner amongst my late Father-in-Law's toolkit. It is most likely prewar and could even be motorcycle related.

Can anyone offer me an idea as to what it would have been used for? It is stamped GIRLING in capital letters and is just under 6.5 inches long.

Cheers

It looks like the kind of spanner that was used to remove the peddle crank on cycles, little or no help!

Steve, it is indeed a locking ring spanner, for a bicycle. Bottom bracket or the steering headset.

I was thinking the same although the radius is very small compared to the crank spanner I have. Also, I would not have expected to see the Girling name on it.

That is the function, but I suspect it is, as you suggest, for a motorcycle or pre war car and for an end cap cap or locknut on a hydraulic or braking (Girling) system.
Neil McGurk

Sounds more likely Neil. Initially he had all sorts of motorcycles before progressing to any number of Morgan 3-wheelers, a BSA Scout, Singer Le Mans and Morris 8. His last classic (not mentioning the Lada!) was back to a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle. I wonder if the tool was for adjusting motor cycle shock absorbers.

I still have the Morris 8 handbook and a picture of his car. Makes interesting reading, especially the sections on sorting out Lucas problems - nothing new there then!

You are right and that is most likely a wrench for adjusting Girling shocks. This page shows an almost identical current production tool. http://www.northerneagle.ca/triumph%20Tool%206.htm

Thanks. Looks very likely. I found a few bits and pieces that look similar to that Triumph list of tools.

Steve,

I'm in the same position of clearing the garage ahead of next weeks house move.

The million dollar question is of course, do you keep all the 'come in handy one day' items?

I've just come accross 30 old ignition keys, should I keep them for another 40 years just in cas?. I don't think so.
