MG MGA - Glovebox Atlas for Britain?

What is a good compact road atlas to compliment a GPS when touring the UK in a MGA? I have A5 Avis Glovebox Atlas of Britain (1994) that I thought was pretty good in its day - is an update warranted?

Mike,

when you get down to A5 size maps, the best one appears to be the Philips Compact Atlas.

As you also have a GPS and I therefore presume the atlas is just to 'sense check' general directions most of them would do including the 20 year old one.

"What is a good compact road atlas..."

Given the size of the UK, I would think they would all be compact! (lol)

Is the reason that Australians need to use a compact road atlas that it has to be small enough to be viewed between the corks dangling from the brims of their hats? :-)

Seriously though, Oz has approx area of 3m sq miles and a half million miles of road whilst in the UK we have less than 100,000 sq miles with almost 250,000 miles of road!

Can we have some of your open space please, we seem to be running out!

Mike, the Phillips A5 atlas is great but if you can wait until you get here and you can cope with a slightly larger size atlas(A3), you can buy accurate up to date ones for one pound in the high street Pound shops or about £3.99 in most petrol stations.

I agree with Colyn. With our compact network of roads it is often vital to have the larger scale so that you can see motorway junctions and the like in more clarity. I stuff my map either behind the passenger seat or slide it down between the seat squab and the tunnel.

PS. Still looking for the glove box in my MGA!

Thanks Colyn and Steve,
I hear what you say. I'll pick an A3 version up when we get there.

G'day Colyn,

Love that, a very sharp retort.

Possibly though the reason is we are too lazy to read anything larger than a stubby label!!

On space though, I'm constantly amazed at the expanses of English countryside that roll off over the horizon, like those typically seen in tourist docos/TV serials. On Scotland perhaps even more so.

I'm married to a Surry girl and she often says the scenes remind her of the England she knew in 1960. I guess, like here, urban areas are spreading all the time though and biting into increasing amounts of that space.
