MG MGA - Grille alert

The currently available batch of Radiator grilles appears to be oversize.

A MKII grille from both Brown & Gammons and from Anglo Parts are 10mm too large on each side. As this part of the grilles is common to all the grilles, the 1500/1600 grilles must also be suspect. Moss Europe says they supply the other two, so I guess that means their's are no good as well.

To ask your supplier if the one he has is correct, the sides should be 27-28mm in width. If it is significantly bigger, it's not going to fit.

I bought a MKI grille from Moss Motors USA two years ago and the fit was absolutely spot on. Made in China to the original spec. i.e. chromed brass with stainless steel slats, not up to BMC quality but very nice all the same. The "MG" badge is not quite right but you have to look hard to see it. Moss Motors said that Moss Europe would be getting the same grilles, and when I spoke with someone at Moss Europe about 18 months ago, he said they had indeed got "original spec" grilles in stock. If they are from the same source as the one I've got, they should fit well and look pretty good. Lindsay.

I don't think the Mk II grills are made by the same manufacturer. I say this because I order a Mk II grill late last year from Moss in the US and it was really poor. Bad fit, horrible mounting brackets, chrome was extremely bad and the list goes on... I put my old one back on the car for it looked far better.

I hope one day we will see a decent Mk II grill but I'm not holding my breath.

Cheers,

The current batch seems to have been made out of spec, the quality (apart from scratches!) was not to bad. But when they are 3/4" too wide and too tall, they are never going to be anything but scrap.

Hi Dominic I fitted one of the new version 2 grills from Moss for a Mk1 car and it was a very good fit in every way the shape was good it was chrome on brass the nosepiece was good as was the badge, the slats were at the correct angle, it was a lot more expensive than their previous offering, the only thing that let it down was the quality of the chrome
