MG MGA - Handbrake assembly

Greetings all,

I'm returning the handbrake assembly back into the frame. Not sure what the correct name for this part/assembly is but....it's the swival part that connects via a bracket on the left side of the rear end housing/axle. The two attachment bolts are of differing diameters so you can only return it the one correct way. No problem there! However, the larger half, the larger bolt/bottom side seems to be so much longer than is required for simply accommodating the washer and locknut. Seems like there should be another something or another attached to the under side of that assembly but I can't rememeber anything being there and the part manual doesn't show anthing that I can find. What's up? Does some other component attach to the underside of this swival assembly. Thanks to all....Happy New Years...Cheers!

Thanks for the image Barney....I had that also. My question is, does some other part attach to the bottom stud? It seems too long for simply having a washer and nut on it. It seems to be designed to accommodate another part of some kind? DOes something else attach to the bottom of this assembly? Thanks again!

The stud is fitted with the larger diameter uppermost. That stud has the following parts fitted to it, in this order from the top:
Nyloc nut (9/16"), the axle bracket, a thick flat washer, a spring washer (wavy type), a thick flat washer, bush(inside cable bracket), a thick flat washer, and a nyloc nut(1/2").
There are only about 2 or 3 stud threads showing outside both nyloc nuts. The wavy washer is not fully compressed to allow the cable bracket to swivel,i.e., the bottom nut is tight while the upper one is not.
The flat washers are quite thick - my guess about 60 -80 thou (1.5 - 2 mm).
Hope this helps.
Peter.

Thanks P.T.,

I guess some paint from the frame paint job got into the mounting bracket hole as I had the assembly inverted with the smaller bolt on top. This makes more sense bolt length wise. I appreciate it. Cheers!

Glad to help. I too had to file out the axle bracket hole to get the paint off to fit the stud. It must be a close tolerance between the stud diameter and the bracket hole.
I remember that getting this assembly apart on a 48 year old car was a real b---h!
