MG MGA - Hardtop
I recently acquired a hardtop for my car. I wasn't really looking for one, but it came and found me. I'm getting to kind of like the idea, though it's another major component to add to the list of things that need to be done. It appears to me that it may be a factory top. Can someone confirm that or not? Thanks. Ken ![]() |

From that one tantalizing photo, I's say it looks like a factory fiberglass hardtop that was introduced with beginning of MGA 1600 production. |

Yes, that's a factory fiberglass hardtop. They didn't exit before beginning of MGA 1600 production, so factory issue for 1600 but not for 1500. However, after beginning of 1600 production you could buy one from the dealer as an aftermarket accessory, so it is a "period correct" accessory for the 1500. |

Thanks for confirming that, Barney. From reading your web site, I was pretty sure it was the 1600 hardtop. I have a lot more important work to do on the car before I worry about the hardtop - after sitting on a pair of ill-fitting Moss replacement sills for 15 years, I finally bought a pair from Sports & Classics that look like they should fit. Time to get serious about finishing the body. But it's fun to have something new to think about. At first glance, the hardtop looks to be in pretty good shape except for seals and headliner. But a closer inspection shows the vinyl is a little worn at the edges and coming apart at the seams. Can the vinyl be removed and the fiberglass cleaned up and painted? Ken ![]() |

Is that a Volvo lurking in the background? |
