MG MGA - Heater bits - Outlet Door Assembly?

Hi guys,

Being that I got scuppered from doing everything I'd planned to do on the car this weekend due to a combination of too much cider and a lack of grommets, I turned my attention to the car's heater box as that didn't require much thought or effort.

After soaking in WD40, all the screws and bolts came free, but I couldn't free-up the outlet door assembly (the "door" at the bottom of the heater), which is pretty much rusted solid in the open position.

Does anyone out there have any ideas of where I can get that part, how much it would be or any tricks for freeing it up? Moss only seem to sell the whole heater (for huge sums of money). It 's part number 7H1995.

cheers,

Grant :-)

Try electrolytic rust removal. It will clean out the rust in areas that are hidden and hard to get to, like your door.

Will give you a step by step on how to do it. Simple, cheep, and it works!

G, at least you have a door. My car has all the bits but that one. I never had any luck finding a replacement.

Grant,
Heat the hinge. I mean hot, glowing if possible. Then carefully work the door back and forth. It will free up. I just used this method on a heater box...works great. Oh...be sure to wear gloves!

Guys,

thanks for your thoughts. I think I'll try the heat-it-up method as I like fire and have a blowtorch handy. If that doesn't work, I'll give the mad scientist approach a go, though the combination of chemicals, water and electricity does intrigue me somewhat ;-)

cheers,

Grant :-)

The hinge is only a piece of wire through the whole assembly. I had a collection of bits and replaced the rusted wire with a piece of brass rod bent over at the ends to hold it on place.

If all else fails, cut the wire at one end and pull it out to release the hinge.
