MG MGA - Heatshield woven asbestos insulation

I have fabricated a new stainless steele heatshield (between the carbs and manifold) and need an insulating material to replace the old woven asbestos material on the originals. Does anyone know of a better material or a source for a suitable substitute.

Any recomendations will be appreciated,
J. Hudrlik

there is also stuff at your local home depot

I used an air gap. Added another plate separated by a few washers using the old rivet holes. So there is a double reflective action. Not tried it yet though.

Haven't tried it, but looks like this would work. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=173498-138-31400

The big Healeys came with asbestos heat shields all around the drivers foot well and under the drivers floor. Moss sells a replacement heat shield hard board that I believe is white and is easily cut to shape, pricy but available. Have a good day!

I would think that cement backer board like Hardi-backer would work well. Available in your local home box store. It is mostly cement and silicon. It is flameproof and water proof. However the thinest available is 5/16" thick.

Thanks for your ideas. Looks like there are a few things that I can try.

Solid, dense materials such as flameproof types are unlikely to be good insulators, which is what the heat shield is for. We are not trying to stop flame propagation.

Home depot and Lowes also sell stuff like a flexible hot pad used for putting trays in the over - but it's intended to back up the area behind a joint when you are soldering with a torch so you don't burn your house down...looks like an asbestos hot pad (don't know what they are made of nowadays...) This would work if you wanted a fabric like material. There is also a rigid cement board type material that comes in 1/8" widths for using on top of countertops for tiling.
