MG MGA - Help: body felt and rubber bits?

Hi guys,

I've just got to the stage of the body being ready to go back on the chassis, and I have a lot of felt bits and some rubber strip left over.

I've got the Moss packing kit, but I've lost the instructions, so I don't know where it all goes. The cork bits are easy, and from a mix of Clasager and pictures from the Moss website, I can work out (roughly) where the rubber goes, but where do all the felt bits go?

Any help would be much appreciated, especially any pictures.

cheers,

Grant :-)

Christopher,

thanks for the link - I had a look earlier but missed that page. Looks interesting, as one has cork on the rear rail by the fuel tank, and one picture doesn't.

I'm guessing that my 85cm length of felt that I have might be an alternative to the cork, but I'm still left with a 55cm, 2 lots of 48cm and 2 lots of 36cm felt, which I know are needed, as I cut tem and labelled their lengths, but I just don't know where they go.

Any more thopughts / pictures / etc?

Cheers,

Grant :-)

Felt goes behind the aluminium triangles at the goal post. Also between the front firewall and the shroud, and the tyre bulhead and the shroud.

Other pieces run along the chassis between chassis and sills.

G, I sugjest you consider using a good silicon caulk on either side of the felt and then lay it in a bed of caulk. Otherwise it will suck up moisture like a sponge.

The simple version is, use cork packing between body and frame anywhere you have a bolt. The rest originally had felt packing. There should be a few bits of cork under the boot floor.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I have a related questions. Is there a recommendation on where *not* to use the original felt?

I've read some on your site Barney.

So far Ive decided not to use it under the floorboards up front, or at the top of the firewall/tranny cover join, nor did I use it on the tunnel extension or at the rear board join.

I've opted instead for silicone caulking.

When I took my car apart most of the rot was where this felt had been between the wood and metal so I left it out this time. I didn't find the case to be the same where it was used on the body, so I was going to put it back.

I would like to hear what others have done.

Cheers,
Christopher

Guys,

many thanks for your replies. That would explain it, as I've bee following the good guidance on this site and used mastic and sealant whenever I could to stop water ingress and absorbtion, like inder the floorboards,so the felt is surplus!

Cheers,

Grant :-)
