MG MGA - Help: Fitting a windscreen - rubbers?

Hi guys,

I've got my windscreen back and rebuilt, re-chromed and I've got the correct captive nuts for the supports. I have noticed that the rubbers at the bottom of the main stancions have a little gap between them and the silver wing piping (photo attached).

1) Is this normal?

2)Is the rubber the correct shape (it's the shape they all come in, but I have seen less flared ones)?

3)Has anyone got any fixes for it (apart from the obvious of a bit of black caulking?

cheers,

Grant :-)

G Hudson

Grant,
That looks about normal. Have fun driving it and in about a month you will not even remember that little quirk. Have a good day!

Hi Grant

They tend to settle after they have been installed for a bit. To seal the windscreen to the body at the ends, there should be a strip of neoprene-like material about 3 or 4 inches long that wedges under the screen frame inside the car.

Grant, If you have fitted the large round profile mudguard piping (difficult to see in the picture) it will hold the rubber a bit too high. The correct "T" section piping is flatter and will allow the rubber to sit lower. Water will get in there anyway so I doubt caulking would help.

Weather sealing, oil leaks and so on were not high priorities in those far-off days.

If you expect to drive in heavy rain and windy conditions, you could add some clear silicone under the rubber where it is high over the piping. If you can squirt it in, and clean off any excess, you will not see it. Otherwise rain wil find its way in there when driving at speed.

Hi guys,

thanks for your input. I thought it was a "design feature". I only plan to drive in the dry, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Many thanks,

Grant :-)

You'll be moving abroad then, Grant! LOL

Here we have had four weeks of solid sunshine.

THEN, rain and drizzle all through "Drive it Day" events yesterday, only clearing up after getting home in the afternoon.

And now a beautiful sunny day again today!
