MG MGA - Help: Shut face panels, etc

Hi,

the body's nearly all done and I've come to fit the shut face panels and I've hit a little promblemette....

There are (supposed to be) 4 wedge shaped tapping plates that the rubber door buffers go into. I appear to have misplaced these, so I was wondering if anyone could:

a) send me a photo so I have an idea of what they look like, as I might have not noticed them.

b) tell me where I can get new ones from, as the part doesn't seem to be listed.

cheers,

Grant :-)

Lindsay,

thanks for that. I need to get my eyes tested!

Cheers,

Grant,
They are very easy to make if you have a grinder, tap and drill and some flat stock. If you want dimensions I can get them for you. Have a good day!

Been there, done that, and I sympathize with anyone who would buy these parts from Moss Motors. I have struggled with the bad parts for decades. No matter how many times I complain and tell them how to make the parts right, they have refused to change these parts for more than 20 years. I bought bad parts and complained in 1986, again in 1998, and again in 2008. Well, maybe I just tossed the cheap parts out without bothering to complain this last time. I suppose they will never supply good parts as long as people keep buying the junk and not returning it. Each time I talk to them they say there are few or no complaints recorded, so they assume all customers are happy and continue to supply the same duff parts. I think the only way to get constructive comments recorded in their records is to buy a part and then return it with comments as to why it is being returned. No returned parts equals no complaints and all satisfied customers.

For decades I have been making my own parts each time after receiving bad parts from the vendor. Pity a vendor can't get it right on such simple parts, and that every individual has to struggle to solve the problem on their own. This BBS thread finally got me motivated to make the drawing and post a new web page. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd210.htm

John,

thanks for the offer, but it looks like Barney beat you to it! ;-)

Barney,

many thanks for that, as usual an invaluable source of info.

cheers,

Grant :-)

There is much motor trade terminology that I still do not fully understand.

Whilst I can probably make a reasonably intelligent guess about 'Shut face panels' in this thread, can someone enlighten me with the correct definition. For instance, am I guessing right that it is that panelling in a door aperture that is covered (not exposed) once the door is closed? Is it always part of the main static body work and not on the door itself?

Here is a picture showing a roadster shut face panel in primer gray held next to a coupe. You can see where it goes and the differences between coupe and roadster.

Thanks RJ

My real query is why is it called a shut face panel? I know everything has to have a name, but why not simply door latch panel or door post panel etc?

In coachbuilding terminology a door was hinged on the hinge pillar and closed (shut) against the shut pillar. The side of the pillar facing the door becomes the shut face or the hinge face.

So why did they introduce the A, B and C posts naming convention (along with the F section on an MGA)- no wonder people get confused!

Doing a Google search, the term seems to be mostly applied to MGs and Jaguars. I don't know if this is because they have a separate sheetmetal piece in this location and no other car does?

Anyway, it's a good question. I always assumed it was a British thing. Sort of like boot and bonnet and hood etc. I never questioned it. But then you know what ass-u-me means.

I suspect the various parts were named in the order in which they were desigbned. A, B, C, etc. It may even refer to the blueprint drawings of each part. Sometimes we try to apply logic to something that has no logic and we become confused by the lack of logic? I'm not sure where I'm going with this, logically speaking!

Hmm! I am more familiar with the "shut your face" panel. That is the one my bride hits me with when I talk too much. (Just kidding)
