MG MGA - How do you remove a Hayden fan?

I've pulled my radiator to take to the radiator shop to use as a template for the new Maine radiator, but I want to keep the 10" Hayden fan mounted in front. It mounted with 4 plastic tabs, pushed through the coils.

I can't see a way to release the tabs on the back. I can snip them off, but then I can't reuse if needed in the future.

Ken,
They are a one time use device. Snip them off, save the back washers with the 2 holes and when remounting the fan use black nylon tie wraps pushed thru from the front of the rad, through the 2 holes of the plastic washer and back thru the rad to the front where the tie wrap can be cinched snugly around the protruding fanframe leg. Using all four corners makes for a very secure installation - like it was.
I've moved my fan from 2 different cars - not a problem.

Hey John - thanks for the rapid response. I had a feeling that was the case, but didn't think about using the tie wraps as a replacement!

Or get the original fan mounting kit. See Victoria British 2-7768 Quick Re-installation Kit $5.95

Thanks Barney!

Getting that Maine radiator you mentioned - hopefully it will make the fan unnecessary, but just in case.

Ken, why don't you run with just the electric fan and remove the pump-mounted fan? That's how mine is. You will have extra power at your disposal and your fuel economy will improve. It's worth a try and the fan blades can be re-fitted in minutes if it doesn't work.
Lindsay Sampford

Lindsay - I might try that except the noise of the fan is a bit annoying - a high pitched whine.

FWIW, I just had to have a radiator repaired that had the plastic through-the-core type fan mounting on it. They rubbed through the tubes in two places and caused it to leak.

This wasn't a MGA radiator, maybe they are tougher?

Mine was a standard Moss unit. I installed it in 2005, then added the fan in 2007. Still not leaking when I took it out yesterday, with about 20K miles on it since the fan was added.

Ken, is your fan controlled by a thermostat? It should spend most of its time not running, I have mine set to cut in at around 212 and it cuts out at around 190. My fan is a Revotek and is quite quiet. I am amazed at how long it runs for after the power to it is cut, it must have some good bearings!
Lindsay Sampford

Lindsay - I originally had it set to run by themostat, but there was no adjustment available. It turned on at around 195. I changed it to manual to allow turning it on early just as I began to sit in traffic. It's a Hayden fan and quite noisy much unlike yours.
