MG MGA - How to address luggage rack holes?

Thought would be appreciated on what to do to fill the holes in my MGA aluminum trunk lid where there was a luggage rack. I have a mig welder, but from what I have read, using that to address the holes, may be over my head and experience level. Is there an epoxy that works well for this? Any other ideas? Thanks
Tom Going

TG, suggest you cut aluminum blank discs to fill the holes and then take the boot along to a TIG welder who will have the job done in 10 minutes. Then you do the work of lightly grinding down and filling smooth.

Buy a second lid without holes (ebay BIN $100) and have it sprayed to match the car. Then you have both options available, and buying it it probably will cost the same as getting the holes repaired - in any case you will have to respray the lid once the holes are repaired.

That's what I did, Dominic, although in reverse: the boot/trunk lid on the car had no holes, so I bought another (£6 + £10 P & P on ebay) with holes already made for my boot rack. With two hinge sets, it's a quick swap.

If you cut out filler disks and take it to a welder, be sure to pick a weldable alloy. Some alloys of aluminum are not considered weldable. Maybe take a piece of whatever scrap you cut the disks out of to the welder for him to run a few experimental beads on before he tackles your lid. Original alloy appears to be 5052, which is a common marine alloy.

I'm personally planning to go with the 2 lid solution.

A second (unmolested) lid is the answer if you can get one! I had the holes in my coupe lid welded probably 20 or 30 years ago but the marks are now showing!

If you use thumb screws the change-over is five minutes with no tools, and never dismount the hinges. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd118.htm

Buy a luggage rack!

How about a S/S cover from a Mini. It's used to cover the extra wiper holes. MiniMania sells them
