MG MGA - How to clean the silver fender piping

My piping is only 4 yrs old - from Moss - and it is really dirty. Sorta an orange look to it. Nothing (warm soapy water, Armor All, mild citrus solvent) gets it clean. Scraping with finger nails seems to be best approach but I'm hoping for something better :)

Anybody have a sure-fire way to clean it?

Ken, I have the same issue with the piping on my car. PO installed it about 12 years ago so I'm not sure of the vendor, but likely eith Moss or VB.

Sorry, but I haven't found anything yet other than SERIOUS (and painful) fingernail scraping that gets the gummy dirt off. I keep thinking that there must be ae new-fangled wonder cleaner that'd do the job with just a quick wipe...Only I haven't found it yet. Have you thought of asking Moss what would get it clean?

Goof Off works a charm.

I hadn't heard of Goof Off before but just read about it on the web. They have several different types - which do you recommend?

I picked up a spray can of it at Ace Hardware and gave it a try on a small section - presto! It took the dirt right off. I'm a bit leary of how it smells - it has some heavy duty ethers in, so I flushed it right away with water and ran some Armor All on the bead. I'll let it all dry and check for any problems with the rubber and adjacent paint, but so far, I'd say this is, as T McCarthy says above, "a charm".

I forgot to mention that the type I bought (only type the store had) was "Graffiti Remover".

Ken,

Mine says:

Professional strength

Goof Off

The Ultimate Remover

Like you I didn't want to chance the paint. I used it on a paper towel and quickly rinsed it.

I haven't seen any bad results and that was about 6 weeks ago.

Mine cleaned up with just scrubbing with a wash mit and carwash soap. But it took some elbow grease.

Great tidbit of info Tysen. I picked up some Goof Off at the hardware store yesterday and just gave it a try. It requires a bit of rubbing, but it actually does work. Thanks (from me and my thumb nail).

Simple Green and a tooth brush.
Robert Peate

Both Goof-off and Simple Green are tremendous cleaners. Nothing cleans a BBQ grill like Simple Green. I agree with Ken, Goof-Off has some nasty ingredients, but I have used it on lots of finishes with generally safe results. Make sure that you test it on your paint before using it and rinse it off quickly.
Good Luck!
