MG MGA - I should know better!
I recently purchased a wood shift knob from an ebay vendor....I didn't take the time to examine it, but it has a plastic insert nut...As soon as I screwed it on, I knew it was crap, but by that time the threads were already pulling out.... When I contacted the vendor to tell him that I was "disappointed" in the quality, he basically said that since I "used" the knob, he wouldn't take it back.... Now he is not answering my notes.... He says no one has trouble with these....I can't believe it...I'm not one of these "ham-fisted" guys that over tightens, or strips threads...I am very careful with things that I do to a car.... I am considering complaining to ebay. What would you do? Edward |

I'd give the vendor a black mark in his record. |

If you leave him negative feedback, he'll be back in a more positive frame of mind in a hurry. Negative feedback costs the seller money on ebay these days. |

Raise a case with eBay and get your money back. Simple. |

If you paid with PayPal it's pretty easy to get your money back. |

So, after he considered the possibilities, he decided to let me "exchange" the crappy knob for another one.... Problem , of course, is , the next one will be just as bad as the first.... Of course, he pointed to his printed policy of "no refunds or exchanges, after the knob is used".... Well,(DOH !),it is used, how else would I know it was so poorly made, unless I actually put it on the car? I did pay with PayPal, but I wonder if they also will point to his printed policy? Edward |

You can talk to Paypal to ask about the situation, but I think you have to file a complaint with eBay first. If you can satisfy them that the part is defective or was misrepresented in the eBay ad, they will reverse the transaction. |

I had a similar aftermarket shifter. Plastic insert. One size fits all threads. I removed the plastic insert and epoxied a nut inside the recess. I may have used 2 nuts back-to-back. I canpt recall. I never had an issue again. So for the cost of 2 nuts and some 5 minute epoxy, you can have a solid shifter tomorrow. |

Chuck That is exactly what I intend to do with the "new" one... I just hate that I have to take a new part and remake it. I will use aluminum , and make an insert on the lathe, which will be epoxied in place. I did that once before on another car, but it did not have a plastic insert, just a loose metal one.... Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Edward |
