MG MGA - ignition switch

Hi all,

I have an ignition switch and no keys. But I have a nice new lock(bought in Beaulieu!!!).Has anyone of you a tip to get the old lock out of the switch so I can replace it with the new lock.

Take a look in the archives under:
Changing ignition tumbler
and
Changing the lock in the ignition switch
Good luck

Fairly easy to do WITH a key, turn the switch to the on position, then push a stiff wire through the hole in the switch body to push a brass pin in. The whole tumbler and key will come right out.
Without a key however, one would have to drill a new hole would have to be drilled in order to line up with the brass pin. The tumbler set should come out since there is a slot inside the body (in the off positon) where the tumblers would side out (with out a key).
No Guarantee this will work, but worth a try.

Good Luck

The new hole is slightly off in the above picture. It should be inline with the old hole and the slot of the key.

The easiest way is to buy an old key to match the old lock! They come up quite often on eBay so it won't take long to find your number.

Quite right Neil - the key number should be on the face of the ignition lock - autojumbles usually have someone with a board full of old keys - I bought 2 spares for mine that way. Failing that Herman - let us know the number -I am sure someone on here has a spare they could send you - good luck

Loads of suppliers advertising on Ebay. Just type in "Classic car keys FS FP FT"

As Cam says I for one have a dozen or so spare keys so let us know your number. If you get a rusty old key you can use your new lock, but if you get good original keys you can keep a piece of originality. The end of the lock (tumbler) is stainless steel and so long as it hasn't been damaged (by a screwdriver for instance!) it will polish up like new.

Thank you all for the answers.
Key number is FP745.
If someone has a spare key I would be more than happy.
